sales Wave.com Sells for $420,000 to a Fintech Startup

Spaceship Spaceship
One word .COM domain names have always been considered to be a valuable asset class, with a large number of these names having multiple potential uses. Today, it has been discovered that yet another one word .COM domain has been acquired by a company looking to improve its online presence through the use of a domain. The domain in question is Wave.com.

The news of this acquisition was discovered by George Kirikos, and announced on his Twitter account, along with details of the sales price. The valuable four-letter .COM name was acquired by a New York based fintech startup for their money transfer service.

Since its inception, Wave's online presence has been hosted on the SendWave.com domain name, but they recently had the opportunity to upgrade, and have done so. The domain name Wave.com was owned by Wave Systems Corp., and was sold during a bankruptcy sale.

The $420,000 price tag for the name was discovered by Mr Kirikos, who shared the PDF file that confirms the sale, with his followers on Twitter.

Chime Inc, the company behind Wave, provide a solution for US and Canadian residents to send money to a select number of African countries without having to pay a transfer fee. The acquisition of Wave.com occurred in April of this year, just weeks before the company confirmed a fundraising round that raised over $9.5mm, according to an SEC filing.

It's likely that this sale will now be included in the next DNJournal sales report, where it will become the 8th highest domain sale of this year, in front of the $375,000 sale of Broker.com that was completed by Sedo's Dave Evanson at the beginning of August.

What's your opinion of the sale? Did the buyer get a good deal here? Have your say in the comments below.

Seriously, under today's circumstances the buyer has paid definitely too much for this domain.

My opinion is that this was undervalued - I don't think they would've got this price under any other circumstances.

The buyer got a great deal imo. Incredible brand and superb domain.

This is a good deal. Wave is one heck of name that can fit hundreds of brands from energy to radio and much more. Every pricing isn't in s box and contingent on market. They are still people and companies who understand the power of name irrespective of market etc... Again great deal..

My statement was because it is a .com domain.
If they would have paid that sum for wave.top I would have said that they got a great deal / domain, because, and at this point I totaly agree with you, .top is the king of all TLDs.

There is something seriosly wrong with you.

Personally, I wouldn't have been surprised if it have sold for the double amount.

I think the buyer made a good deal.

That's funny. I was recently thinking about this name. No intent to buy or anything...I was just thinking about how good the name was, and how it'd be nice to own it. :-P

Great deal, IMO.

I say: If the name you want is available (hand reg or aftermarket), just buy it and count your lucky stars. There's no shortage of mediocrity. &Afterall, you pay about $35k/year for your lowest-paid employee. Your name is going to work for you 24/7/365.

This domain could have sold for more. Just like power.com.

From "sendwave.com" to "wave.com" is an amazing upgrade for the buyer! Thanks for the write-up, James.

As for the sale, great name and a great price! Although from the branding part I might just like the plural a bit more than the singular.

Correction: looks like this is up and running with 146,606 rank in the USA on Alexa, and 500,000 or so worldwide.

What I find most interesting about this it's an app based startup, with a clear call to action on sendwave.com to "download the app".

I think the price is a fair one; win-win for both imo.

Totally true, they should've gone with wave.top at a fraction of the price they paid for wave.com, dont they know that .top is king of all daimins?

Think this domain would of been great for a Surfboard Company.
Great domain name! congrats to the buyer.

I think Wave.com is a little bit similar to 360.com
Wave is a 360 degree word(yes, only for english speakers).
Of course "360" is better than "Wave" but 360.com sold for $17.000.000 and Wave.com sold for $420.000. That's why I think 420K is not a huge sale. Not so bad but not a super sale.

As a self proclaimed 420 domainer, I approve this sale.

When hitch hiking, I hold my out, and at each car. The is uber important. Why? Because soliciting a ride is illegal in America, however, saying hello to random strangers, and accepting a ride if offered is perfectly legal.

Which is a better domain Uber.com or .com? Is there an emoji for uber? If not, I think is the better domain...

I'm more surprised that the buyer isn't Salesforce. SFDC's analytics product is called Salesforce Wave, which they are pumping millions of dollars and a lot of people in to, to make it a success. It is an entire Platform play for them! Typically they are a prominent buyer of 1 word .com's which relate to their products, how they've missed this I really do't know. I honestly think SFDC would have paid over $1m for this.

I wonder how the trustee of the estate valued it at $400,000 or whether that was what the buyer offered and he/she accepted it, or whether there was some kind of auction. Anyway, it seems like a fair price.

The buyer must have thanked to the seller just because it ended its sale for 420.

That sale is a steal at $420K. I am pretty sure it could have sold for high six figures if not 7. The buyer got a great bargain deal imho.
