opinion Finally, a tried and true registrar that domainers can trust!

Spaceship Spaceship
Taking a leap to a new registrar can be quite a scary move for some people if they're not familiar with its user interface or they have concerns should the registrar be fairly new. Nevertheless, there is a tried and true registrar that domainers can trust, with lower expenses that will also save you a headache or two. I have personally used them since nearly day one of their launch and can honestly say that their superior service is the reason I have chosen them over other registrars.

Earlier this month, @Eric_Lyon brought up GoDaddy’s failure at customer retention.
Naturally, being a customer of GoDaddy since 2005, my brain started making the connections that were previously overlooked due to such a busy schedule, higher priorities, and frankly, the convenience factor that numbed my attention to the slow degradation of their consumer retention efforts.
Plenty of influential domain investors chimed in about their theories of GoDaddy retention, which range from getting you in the door to corporate greed.

Another person was so fed up with GoDaddy that he even took the step to give Sevan Derderian of Uniregistry a shout out that he would be transferring his domains there.

My theory is that it’s how you’re treated once you’re in the door that is the issue with customer retention. The main issue lies with poor customer service.

For this reason, Sevan comes in again by earning my respect for putting the Customer back into Customer Service. There have been occasions when the platform wasn’t the best, as all are during development and early launch stages. Having said that, I was able to get a hold of Sevan in an airport, in another country, and I believe even on an airplane when I needed assistance on some transfer issues. He'd usually respond with a solution immediately, but there have been occasions when he would reply with, “I’m heading to a meeting, I will get back to you in 45 minutes.” Sure enough, he kept his word each time.

I had the opportunity to speak with him for about an hour over the phone, which was a great experience. We ended up talking and he mentioned that every company Frank Schilling built from the ground up was focused on quality instead of quantity. Surely, Sevan is the glue of Uniregistry that puts quality in the customer service as he is compiling policies for the company to follow going forward.

When the issue of pricing was raised, he said not to worry about that as discounts are featured on the main site. However, they want to get to know their customers and have you take the proactive approach by contacting them. Sevan personally monitors every email that comes in and is dedicated and passionate to providing quality customer service to help you succeed.

The $12.88 might appear to be a huge investment for a .com, though, he is willing to work on the pricing with domain investors with a portfolio of as little as 1 to 25 domains. Regardless of whether you are a .com, .net, .org, gTLD, or ccTLD investor, get hold of him to see how much of a positive impact he can have on your business.

No need to worry getting in touch with Sevan if you don’t have a legitimate concern about your business. He, like most, has a fun side as well.

After a business relationship with Uniregistry and @Sevan, you will then see what customer service and retention is all about. Many of us can take what he preaches and apply it to our own businesses for longevity and growth.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Excellent point. Exactly what I instruct people to do. I coupon hunt for $2 names and at the end of the year when GD wants $10-$15 to renew, I transfer them out to single digit pricing.

Same here. I transfer from GD to Name.com for $8.25 and then back to GD for $2. Besides money, a big issue for me is that GD premium listings have been a top source of sales and now that afternic premium listings appear on GD it means that I can switch back and forth between GD and name.com without dropping those listings. It would take a lot to convince me to move elsewhere especially if that move carries an added cost with no obvious benefit in return for the extra outlay.

Wow, Uniregistry is really evolving! Just noticed they reward customers with Topcoin for purchases and renewals! They also accept Topcoin! We are all about digital currencies and very impressed. Sent an email to Sevan, thinking of switching!

Saving a buck here and there is okay but you need to factor the time spent chasing coupons. Unless you think your time is not worth anything.
But a 99-cent, or even a 1.99 is not just your typical coupon. It's a serious coupon....

And if anything, i'm happy to use a 99 cent coupon for domains that are in my "contemplating" bin - domains you want to hold-on to for another year to see if anything pans out with it.

Besides, i'm not sure if Godaddy does discriminate against domains purchased with 99-cent coupons when it comes to red carpet treatment ?! I mean do they check your record and say 'oh, you're the 99-cent guy, can i put you on hold for 30 minutes?'

This is probably just me, but i have never experienced any domain issues with my registrar once the transfer is complete. They just sit there quietly until expiry date.

To be honest I don't mind paying a little more because it is a business expense for tax purposes anyway. You are all incorporated right ? :)
I'm glad i am not under Uncle Sam or Her Majesty The Queen. :D

$12.50 this is a joke right. Nothing against him but Frank didn't built uniregistry for domainers, he built it for his pocket to get more money.
Come on he is a business man, he will not build anything to please you. Wake up people.

Take care of your business, and it will take care of your needs.

And I agree with sdinc security and convenience is a must.

I have 2 factor at Uni and I'm not quite certain where you got your $12.50 price.

Frank surely isn't lining his pockets from FMA and others with at least 2 domains, which would put you single digit if you're not afraid to ask.

I pay $15 per domain registration and renewals sometime. Depends on the company.

At $10 renewals anyways with Godaddy I'm surprised anyone of you are complaining about a service you've never tried (Godaddy is actually $15 unless you renew a lot at once or pay for their club)

Thats like going to the store and getting a vape pen or something and the guy saying, this ones $10, but you can talk me down to $5 but its a lot of trouble, and this ones $15 but will last you all year and it's better.....

Why are so many quick to talk crap about the $12.50 and the service and they've never used the service it seems???

I paid $5 for 3 years worth of online web hosting and it's the best service I've had with a company so far.

but it doesnt give me the right to go out saying new company X sucks because its price is $12/year and I got it for just over $1/year

I'm happy with the DDC at GoDaddy. For a $7.50/mo you get $8.29 .COM renewal and registrations.
I've never had a single serious issue with them. The only gripe I have with them are transfers from Pheenix, and thats a Pheenix issue.

As far as hosting... I would never use GoDaddy; HostGator suits me fine, and the prices and service I am happy with.

If there is a registrar that offers significantly better prices, without coupons (or volume deals), then I would like to hear about that.

Thanks.

Godaddy's horrible when it comes to hosting. I paid for 2 years of service and extra services, their rep deleted my SSL from my account and took all the extra services i paid for. It's no wonder they can afford to sell cheaper domains (under a 'club)

When they rip people off for $100s

Godaddy should be known as a fraudulent business. The fact they sell 0.99 com names is probably the only reason they are still a major provider. I mean, you're not a provider when you don't provide the services people pay for....that's Godaddy.
You pay for all these services and features, but you know what, you'll lose half of them, and now Godaddy has a limit on their hosting services so that you can't operate a community site if it is a growing site, eventually you'll cap your limits and lose your hosting after they take all the other services you pay for.

Godaddy is nothing more than a joke, and a fraud

I emailed Uniregistry and got a price really close to the Godady Discount membership club price! (and i didn't have to pay 89.99 to join any 'club')

Its a little tiny more per domain, but still close enough that i will be transferring when its time.

The only downside to this is that you cannot use Topcoin for discounts if you're at the lowest price possible. You can however use them over at Rightside and the other registries bound to join in.

All it takes is to be yourself, explain your situation and ask. Don't demand and you will most likely get your way.

You will enjoy the extra features of Uniregistry such as connecting your account to Domain Name Sales and the newest one of Domain Tracker. The tracker will tell you when your domains at other registrars are about to expire. At that point, you can easily transfer them in. (Two methods: automatically by adding your domain with the auth code or just the domain name) :)

I honestly like Uniregistry interface, layout, etc. However...Frank as a person very well versed in the domain industry, has also "blocked" out good domains through his registry. This makes us a little...uneasy

But then again, their pricing, security, interface, etc are honestly decent and way better than other registrars out there

Few points why I like Uniregistry:
  • They have friendly customer service
  • Sevan got me a great price which ass whoops NC or GD
  • Topcoin(works even if your price is discounted)
  • Great interface!!!(everything makes sense and it's very easy to use)
  • Domain Tracker
  • Awesome domain privacy service(free of charge, whilst NC takes about $3 and GD some much more unless you want to scoop up for coupons all day, who wants to do that? I used to do it, I got bored)
  • 2 Step Auth
What I don't like:
  • Very small variety of ccTLDS, I still have to use GD for some domains because Uniregistry does not support them yet
Bit of skepticism
Since Frank runs the business, I'm a bit on guard, especially when it comes to renewals, I am very careful when it comes to making sure renewals are paid on time. Also, I'm not sure how they handle take down requests, personally I don't think I'll have a problem and since it's a Cayman Islands company behind it, probably it won't be too bad, but we will see. I hope everything runs fine and we won't see any drama.

Nevertheless, I put my trust and back this project because it's been great so far and I want it to be a success.

I reached out to Uniregistry and have not been given any response yet. How long does it usual take them to respond to a mail?

Uniregistry's default .com price has been lowered to $10.88, FYI, although no one here will be paying even that much as long as you contact sales first.
