It's extremely rare to see a three-letter .COM expire. With even the worst three-letter .COM's now worth at least $15,000 to an investor, they're prized assets that are popular worldwide. Recently, the news broke that the domain VIQ.com was due to expire, leaving the community wondering who would catch the name.
Over the weekend it was revealed that DropCatch.com, one of the largest drop catching services, caught the domain name and was promptly placed into a public auction where the bidding quickly exceeded $10,000.
Before expiring, VIQ.com looks to have been used to host a Japanese magazine's website, Patchwork Tsushin Co. It looks as though the domain was active for many years before a parked page replaced the company's website earlier this year.
I'm not sure what happened to the company, but one of their Twitter accounts hasn't been active since June 2015, whilst another was active in September 2016. Both accounts list VIQ.com as their homepage.
It's strange to see a three-letter .COM expire, especially considering the fact that the owner would have had numerous opportunities to sell the name in the past to Chinese investors or brokers that contact three-letter .COM owners on a regular basis.
This isn't the largest sale that DropCatch.com has posted. In January 2016 they caught Lian.com, which sold for $220,950 at auction. They have also caught one other three-letter .COM ; PDM.com, which sold on the platform for $31,050 in April 2015.
