domains Company Using a .WORLD Domain Receives $500 Million in Series A Funding

Spaceship Spaceship
A .WORLD domain name that was registered in January 2015 is now being used as the home page for a company that's raised $500 Million in Series A funding this week.

The company in question is called OneWeb, and the domain name is OneWeb.world. The idea behind the company is to create a service that allows broadband to be accessed via satellite - 648 separate satellites to be precise.

The project - which is due to cost between $1.5B and $2B has been backed by Richard Branson's Virgin, Qualcomm, Coca Cola and many other companies. According to Reuters, OneWeb is set to launch their service in 2019.

The co-founder of OneWeb is Greg Wyler, and ex Google employee who left the search giant in 2014 to start WorldVu (which later became OneWeb).

From a domaining point of view, this is the first .WORLD domain I've seen in action, and I think it's quite a cool use of the .WORLD TLD. OneWeb.world was created on 14th January 2015 - the same day that the TLD was first available for the public to register. Another TLD they could have considered was .GLOBAL.

However, at this point in time .com is still engrained in the average Internet user's mind, so acquiring .COM domain names could be part of their strategy going forward - even if they're defensive acquisitions which forward to OneWeb.world.

OneWeb.com has been registered since 1995 and is currently displaying a very basic web page for a company called One Source. From the archive data that's available, it looks like OneWeb.com is still with its original owner. OneWebWorld.com was registered last year by an individual in Pakistan.
