With the new year fast approaching, it’s a good opportunity to check that your domain names and your strategy are all set to make it a good year in terms of domain investing. Take a few minutes out of your day to make sure that your existing domain names are ready for the new year.
Sell, drop, or keep?
The end of the year is an excellent time to look at your entire portfolio of domain names to see which domain names you’d like to sell, keep, or drop in the new year. Do you own any terrible domains that have no chance of selling to either another investor or an end user? Make sure these aren’t set to auto-renew and allow them to expire. You might also consider gathering leads you've received in the past year. If you are looking to sell a specific name in the new year, notifying old leads of the domain's availability could produce your first sale of the year.
Renewal dates
Whilst you’re looking through your portfolio, it would be a good idea to make a note of your renewal dates. If you have the money available, you may be interested in making plans to renew domain names for the year at the start of January. This gives you peace of mind that all of the names you want to keep are renewed for the year, so you can turn your attention to acquisitions and sales.
Members of NamePros often post domain discount codes on the forum, so you may be able to save some money on your renewals by looking for valid codes on NamePros.com.
Name servers
Are all of your domain names pointing to the correct name servers? Did you recently change parking services and forget to switch some name servers? Did you transfer your domain to another registrar after it expired, which will often result in the wrong name servers being used after the transfer has completed? Now is an excellent time to make sure that all of your domain names are pointing to where you intended.
Pricing
Is your pricing outdated? Do you have outdated “buy it now” prices set on any domain names? If you have listings on Sedo, Afternic, GoDaddy, or any of the other major marketplaces, you should take the time to review the prices that are listed. I’m sure that last year there were a lot of four-letter .COM owners who missed out on big sales due to the fact that their domains had low buy-it -ow prices on various domain marketplaces.
Marketplace listings
Do you have domain names that are for sale but aren’t listed on the major domain name marketplaces? You may consider adding these names at the start of the year to allow your domains to be viewed by a wider audience, possibly increasing the chances of a sale.
