I often wonder if people belief dotmobi is already succesful ?
some of us in this forum still think is years away but the success of dotmobi is almost exactly the pattern with dotcom in the early 90's , not only it has reach the 500k mark but the amount and quality of live sites and recently Amtrak rail just joined this row.
The success of dotmobi is already established , How many tld apart from dotcom was adopted at this rate by corporations ?

Yes, it's larger, heavier, and much more expensive than pretty much any phone, although these devices are getting smaller, lighter, and cheaper at an astounding rate. The CF + SD slot, on top of a built in 4gb hard drive, allows the possibility of 20+ GB on this device (replace microdrive with 8gb one, cf card with an 8gb/16gb one, sd with a 4gb one). Such a device can do almost anything a laptop could do and comes in a package weighing a whole lot less.

Perhaps 3 years from now it will be the size of Scandi's phone?

Heh, seems like only yesterday I got excitied over the release of the Sony Ericsson T68 with its whopping 256 Colour screen! :hehe:

.mobi will be big by this time next year. i am thinking this summer there will be ads for .mobi sites and by christmass there will be lots of talk about advertising on .mobi sites. No way it takes seven years or even three.
i showed a guy at work the espn.mobi site today and he was like "wow thats cool" It will all come down to how fast money is pent on branding .mobi as the place to go for mobile content.

That's why .mobi will succeed! It's all about marketing. Believe me.

This is going to be 99% marketing, absolutely. 25 years ago I actually remember people seeing the first "Pc's" on the market, and saying "why would anyone use those?". Well, we were marketed to convince us why we needed them. Everything is about the marketing, that's why it is so important how mtld handles that aspect of this.

IMO, the success of .mobi has nothing to do with how great anyone thinks it is or not, actual advantages or disadvantages, it's all about how this thing is marketed to the public.

As much as ive deliberately tried to stay out of .Mobi discussions, I have to say that no matter how many "Its official .mobi is a success" threads there are, only time will decide.

I can see both points of view. A lot of you guys have invested serious bucks in the extension and it has a fighting chance, but just that.

A new post every day proclaiming the second coming simply because a single brand has chosen to make a mobile version of their .com wont do it, its you guys holding a fat proportion of the stock developing the names is the only way.

Holding large portfolios to sell in the aftermarket I would advise is a bad idea currently.

Good luck in any respect.

Marketing is very important but lots of things that were heavily marketed have failed. I guess this is why I talk about content so much vs parking pages. Right now there is little in the .mobi space for mtld to market beyond the concept. I like that they have placed a heavy emphasis on helping people build sites. Content volume is the deal breaker to me.

I have a friend who is working on a mobi site for a monthly gallery tour in Sacramento. The event has been going on for years but now people will be able to use their phone to know where to go and what to see. Real, usable content, not another Sedo parking page.

I will assure you your friend is not the only one... thousands of developers are creating these kind of .mobi sites right now. Don't worry!

I've said this before, and although I agree that little guys developing content is great, that is not where the success of .mobi lies.

The majority of the success still lies in the biggest websites in the world promoting their .mobi's. The vast majority of internet traffic in the world can be attributed to the top 100 alexa websites, and dir.mobi is not on that list. They all go .mobi, and .mobi goes, simple as that.

Good content is good content on any extension, and will help any extension, but that's not going to guarantee the success of it.

Sorry to be so corporate minded, but that's the reality, IMO. If the biggies don't get involved, nothing we do content wise is going to make .mobi take off.

Big money and promotion = success.

I know I am in the minority here, but sorry I just don't see a grassroots campaign ensuring the success of this.

Grassroots campaigns generally don't work, or Dennis Kucinich would be President (although he should be!!).

That being said, the more good content there is and the less parking pages there are, the better of course. Cute little .mobi sites certainly won't hurt....

I know I'll get a lot of flack for this post, but I don't care. I'm keeping it real.

Don't focus on the big ones, focus on the new ones. That's marketing!

I am getting the sense lately that some mobi enthusiasts are becoming more skeptical and realistic about mobi.

I know I certainly won't bother with a mobile internet access that's anything less than satisfying. Percentage of phone use has nothing to do with internet use. There really is just one earner in the cell phone industry and that's the providers most of which back mobi to some degree. I think it's their attempt to keep making money and hedging their bets hoping for control on how the next wave of mobile internet occurs.

Good job, Garrett ... and, really, we're all here to share and learn so you shouldn't catch any flack (and if you do, as I have from time to time, I still think it benefits us ALL more than than it cause hurt feelings for any one person, etc. IMHO). :gl:

You're right ... Google.mobi in a super bowl ad changes the landscape CONSIDERABLY!! :yell: :o

Will that ever happen ... or will it happen in less than 12 - 15 years?
Nooo way, IMHO.

Time will tell, and Good Luck to us all ... and keeping it real! :)

Jeff,

Tell me why you are so certain that you will never hear google.mobi in a Super Bowl ad? I think it's quite possible myself. Not now, but within 5 years or so.

Google.mobi exists right now as we speak....Why does it exist? Because they probably plan on using it.

Glad you are keeping it real. I keep doing the same. I'm all in favor of everything you want. For me it is an important chunk of content, but it is content all the same. The things that make the internet valuable in my daily life is the content. Today I searched for and ordered a water filter for my fridge and an oil filter for my car, checked the latest at a car forum I frequent, read some stories from my local newspaper and googled much of it for even more info, and also spent too much time here at NP (what else is new). I doubt any of it is a top 100 alexa site except for the SE's. If the internet was all about only 100 sites then I probably wouldn't be online and all the domainers who live at NP would be out of business. I know that's isn't what you said but I'm making a point that the diversity of content out there is what makes it work and I think the same will hold true for mobi.

Only you could try and turn a reasonable discussion into one about skepticism.

Because they already have ... :gl: :talk:
Go directly to http://mobile.google.com on your mobile device's browser.

.MOBI, as I've been saying, is unnecessary IMHO.

The exact relationship / nature and scope of the "strategic investment" between Google and mTLD may change my mind on this matter, but so far this has not been forthcoming! :gl:

your right on this point Jesse...not sure skeptical is the word I'd use but it's coming closer to earth and that's healthy...now as more good sites get made .mobi should have a fighting chance...and if one killer site emerges, that will be very kewl...imho

Jeff,

I know they are using mobile.google.com right now, and I'm not happy about it. BUT, google.mobi does redirect to this site. They could start promoting google.mobi at any time, and I think they should, due to the other one being such a mess to type in.

Maybe if I send them an email saying what a pain in the @ss it is to type that in, they'll change their mind, LOL.

If my email works, I will be the first to admit that one man can change the world!

Perhaps they're choosing to use mobile.google.com so that they don't have to follow mtld's rules... Would be nice if that was the case :)

Please do email them ... I would JUMP FOR JOY with an actual response to this matter (from either Google or mTLD)! :yell: :imho:

Do ask about the nature and scope of the strategic invesments, as well ... :gl:
Thanks much, please post all replies here.

Nope, that isn't it. The url for google's mobile search is http://www.google.com/m?output=xhtml&source=mobileproducts and it scores 5/5 at ready.mobi.
