Your stupid name experiences/pitfalls/sales

We've all been there, early on when we first started. Buying names, trying to flip them as quickly as possibly, thus making a very minor profit or even a loss in some cases.

Post your failed attempts when you first started and what you do now to avoid the same pitfalls.

Back when I first started, I managed to reg a few LLLL.com's, a month or so past and I couldn't really find any high end prices, so I managed to sell most of them for low $xx or $x. Funny enough, some of those names have now sold in the mid $xxx region.

Don't rush your sales, easily one of the most important things I've learnt.

I fell for the Blook hype. A quick lesson on how not to follow the crowd. I lost about $200 which isn't much. In hindsight it was stupid and completely speculative. I would have done better at Blackjack.

I think I regged Gblook.com and Gblooks.com :)

My PeopleOfNature.com, considered ( me and other people) a reg fee, sold for a few days ago for mid xxxx. So, at the end of the way, the endusersneed rules and because of that, no name is stupid. IMO

Stupid names are like making wild plays in poker. As a rule, they cost money. On a few occasions, though, you get lucky and make money. But that doesn't change the rule.

On the other hand, it's necessary to give in to our impulses at times. For stress relief, as a reminder not to do it again, to satisfy that wild itch we have, just for fun, to break the monotony...and many more good reasons, I'm sure. Same reason one of my richest clients buys a bunch of lottery tickets at year end.

As long as it doesn't become habitual:)

Mine also went the other way. I hand-regged "MesotheliomaAttorney.com" years ago when I was just starting out. I then went to one of the forums to have it appraised. They ripped me a new one with their opinions, most along the lines of "it's too long" or "what the hell is mesothelioma" or "you must have been drunk when you registered that".

A few days later someone made me an offer so I sold it. Cheap.

About 4 or 5 months after that the term "mesothelioma attorney" was the highest paying keyword phrase at Google, topping $100 per click.

Dang! Now I feel bad again.

Ouch!

It even hurts to read about this.

Sometimes forum appraisals can be way off, especially if the person appraising can't see beyond "generic" and domainer to domainer possibilities.

Look at it this way, Domainica: The fact that you had the foresight to reg this domain in the first place demonstrates that you have a knack for finding hidden treasures.

But, dang, you're right--it's harsh, and you'll always remember the big one that got away.

Registering a .name was the dumbest thing I've dumb. It was a xxx.name, someone offered me $20 for it but I said no, which was a stupid mistake on my part

Yeah, I went for the ole' 'blook' fad and regged several names. When I first got in, I regged a bunch of .bz, yuck.

my biggest mistake was not verifing my sedo account when they started requiring it, may have lost a litle by not having sedo for year but I let those names expire so who knows, it was projectedincome.com so it wasnt that great anyway. I still think I could have sold it if I had had sedo though.
