So hypothetical here...

Your absolute best domain name, lets say you are the first to register it and had the unique opportunity to register any or all extensions.

Which ones would you register?

Here is my list...

.com
.ca (canada) - my home country code
.net
.org
.biz
.co
.me
.xyt

.tv (not sure too damn expensive)

If I am missing one please provide feedback and why.
If I have one listed you feel is unnecessary please provide feedback and why.

So lets say your exclusive domain was king.com and you were the first to register it. What else would you pick while you had the unique opportunity to do do?

Keep in mind that some country codes cannot be registered without residence or I would have added .us for sure.

.org

For resale I only grab...

I often grab the .org with the .com, rarely care for the .net. If it is a shorter brandable, I will grab the domain hack version if there is one.

eg: Repubby (.) com and Repub.by.

Just the .com, and I'd look forward to the traffic leaked from any other registrations. :)

There would be no other registrations yet, you have exclusive ownership.

A valuable domain, what other extension would you register?

As soon as you tell anyone the others would be registered, you have finite time to make the choice.

I'm pretty much dropping everything other than .com, including most of my NGTLD's, for resale. There will always be a few exceptions/whims.

Top 4 are:

.com
.ca
.io
.tv

Of course this order can vary based on the domain itself.

If it was still available for reg it could never be my best domain :xf.grin:

But if I was the first to register it and these times were the 1990's..

I would reg the domain in

.com
.tv
.co
.net

for resale: .com (maybe .ca, .co, .io, org, net, if its a short, popular, dictionary word)

For development: .com first (then i would pick up; .org .net .ca if they were available for reg fee)

So you guys are all telling me these are the only extensions you would register if you had a super exclusive domain with a chance to register any domains before it hit the public sector?

Imagine a new company.... you get the domain first.... it's a world wide company on pre release. What extensions would you grab to assure you had a strangle hold?

Lets say it was a new stock or something.

Unless the company would have potential for presence in a specific country, I donโ€™t see a reason to get anything beyond the .com, .net, .org, perhaps .co and .io, and maaaaybe the ngTLD relevant to the industry Iโ€™m opening a business in - probably not if I already owned the .com.

my best domain, so far, i think 19-year-old Travel-Abroad.com

Just .com would suffice in most of the cases, plus .cctld of the countries where I anticipate to do business under the brand, plus a shorter hack, if applicable (like youtu.be, tim.es, ti.me etc.). Plus .org if I anticipate any related charitable foundation...

There are tons of topics on this already .. and honestly .. they are all wrong in assuming any one strategy is best. It really depends 100% on the specifics of the business.

Generally speaking if you have the .com then you don't really need anything else.

The main reason to get alternate TLD's is because the .com is taken. Depending on the domain it could be a very viable alternative if say you're getting a great single one word .co domain vs a longer 2-3 word .com.

Let me just be clear however .. that the above is true in some cases .. and in other cases it's completely untrue. It's not something to be over simplified. It really is company, industry and domain specific. Any generalisation that doesn't specify this is just plain wrong.

Quite frankly what separates the good domainers from the bad ones .. you have to be able to pick the right domain(s) and know what works for which TLD (or if the TLD even works at all for anything).

Obviously specific ccTLD's *COULD* still be very important depending on the nature of the business .. particularly if you forsee operating in different countries and need to present different storefronts (this can be worked around with good coding, but getting all the ccTLD's can reduce headaches for your coders .. lol)

So to very clearly and specifically answer your question: "IT DEPENDS"!

Without knowing the specifics of your company everyone is just guessing!

I do like the tip some people above mentioned of getting the shortened hack version if possible. If you're planning on using Social Media the extra couple characters can never hurt! :)
