i signed a deal with one of the top Russian registrars to register third level yes.ru domain names for Russians. They came to me with this deal about 6 months ago, but i already signed a deal with the Russian teeny girl magazine thats also called YES! to rent them the domain. It took me six months to change the contract with them. But its great now, they get to keep there site yes.ru and i can register the third level domains. The registrar will be paying me about 3 bucks a name. The price for registration will be 5 bucks a name and thats not bad compared to the second level domain registration in Russia.
.RU is about 24$
.SU is about 120$
All the rest of the third level domains in .COM.RU and .NET.RU are all taken already and with the Russian internet going deeper into Russia they will need domain names for businesses in these cities and regions.
The registrar also said that they will be doing a big PR deal with a few large magazines regarding this new registration.
And they already got about 200 orders for 3 level domains in this zone and they havent even started to sell them online yet.
Any remarks?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

So you will promote and sell *****.YES.RU sub-domains?
For each sale, you get approx. $3.00/per (sub) domain?
How did they already get orders for 200 of these, and will they be supporting you with you being able to offer value-added hosting/design/development with the folks who will eventually buy 'em?
Hope I'm understanding it all correctly, not that familiar with the ".RU".
Thanks.

THIS IS THE DEAL

1) they will be the registrar of these domains
2) i will get 3 dollars a year for each registered domain and 30% of hosting profits for them.
3) i dont know about the orders or where they got them

I think its a good deal.
:)

but why are you even involved... thats whats confusing us.
Basically, why do they need to pay you $3 a domain, is it because you're providing them something? This is still confusing.
I think you should restate everything you said in your first post :)

o Great deal.

but $8.00 for a sub domain is a rip off, and i would list in bold letters that it is not a real domain.

ITS NOT 8$

ITS ONLY 6$
AND A REGULAR SECOND LEVEL .RU COSTS 24$

What is "Yes" in Russian, by the way ... just thought of that. I mean there might be a translation mismatch here on second thought ... versus others like "WEB.RU" and "COM.RU" / "NET.RU" which all seem more universal meaning/usability.

YES in Russian is the same thing and also something like slang.

Yes is an English word that is known by almost every Russian.
Its a slang word here that is used instead of lets say like "YAHOO" or "OH YEAH". And it also means YES the same as in English. There is also a Russian YES---"DA". and they also sell third level domains for 7 years already.

www.da.ru

They have over 250.000 domains registered at 3 bucks a year or you can get one free if you purchase 36$ a year hosting for 6MB or 72$ a year for 60MB.
Thats good dough!

Cool, thanks for the detailed insight! :tu:
The succees of the project will depend on how well it's promoted, IMHO ... starting out with "free" offerings may be a good choice, as well.
Da?

Nooo ... I was simply pointing it out as another example, unsure if "Cool" is generally accepted in Russina as our "cool" (meaning) here. I don't own any .RU domains.

Why didn't they just offer you a price for the domain yes.ru? It would certainly cost them less, right?

Anyway, how do you plan on getting people to pay for subdomain domain names?

IM NOT SELLING YES.RU

and i cant sell even if i wanted to, im under contract with the teen Russian magazine YES! for the rent of yes.ru.

I was offered up to 15000$ by the magazine for the purchase, but i made a better deal with them.

1) they paid me 5000$ for the first 5 years.
2) they "as stated in the contract" have to do a spread of the project YES.RU in every magazine of YES! that comes out monthly.
and were talking about 180.000 copies of the glossy mag. Each copy has about 7-9 readers (because its expensive by Russian standards --people share).
3) they have to have banners on mail.ru and 2 other most famous Russian search engines (YANDEX and RAMBLER) for 2 weeks every 2 months.
4) they have 8 commercials that come out on Russian MTV every week advertising the magazine and the site YES.RU.

And this is the best part----

From august of this year (exactly one year after we signed the contract)-- i get 50% of ad space on every YES.RU site page for free for the next 4 years. How about that? It wasnt easy getting this, it took me over 4 months of talks, but it was worth it.
And there also doing a free mail service on YES.RU from september of this year, its in experimental mode now but i got my mail working there already: [email protected] (sounds nice).

And this is a big publishing house. They publish in Russian:

Cosmopolitian
Menshealth
Harpers Bazaar
YES!
FHM
Good Housekeeping
The Moscow Times
Seasons
e.t.c.......

P.S. this publishing house (its called IMEDIA --- www.imedia.ru) also owns the domain name "business.ru"
B-)

Concerning the subdomains, i think they have a future, the price is 3 times less then the second level domains and since the internet in Russia is slowly going to other regions you will get about another 20-35 million users in the next 5 years. Also all the great domains are already taken here. I myself got about about 250 of them.
