I searched out all the threads and there isn't an officially designated .xyz thread so how about this one to cover the subject?

So to start off my first xyz reg is:

Sh stands for Shanghai

May have little value if any but I like short domains as possible that I can get in new extensions and with majority of numbers taken I figured why not for the low reg fee right now. Plus it sorry of rhymes.

So there is a .xyz domain name, which is already registered by someone. I want to check its renewal price.

Then I have to choose from several different lists. Should I just enter my keyword there, and check all the relevant lists? And if I can't find my domain name there, does it mean that the renewal price will be 10 USD / year?

In my case, I am considering to buy a .xyz domain, but the renewal price is 700 USD / year. That's a problem I guess. It's a premium one word .xyz domain.

But would someone buy an xyz domain, even if the renewal price is 700 USD / year?

Honestly, I think the renewals are a death sentence for selling a name. Someone might, you never know, but I think 99.99999999% of people will give up the idea of buying immediately at the thought of paying $700 every year, forever.

It's hard enough to find a buyer with a $9 renewal, and if there was much of a demand to pay $700 for the name it would probably be already registered. Any XYZ that's worth paying $700/year for is probably priced at $3k.

Good question, I have no idea. I assume there are regulations and agreements on what registries can charge and what the process is for increasing prices, just like .com or other extensions, but the buyer certainly doesn't have a say.

One thing I thought about after posting is it probably makes more sense to buy a $3k name than a $700 one, because the name is going to be far better and you're more likely to interest a huge buyer with money to burn.

I'm not saying you should buy a $3k name though! It's to further illustrate how 'premium' renewals are a bad idea.

It's all a risky gamble and you're probably better off just putting the money into a cheap cryptocurrency.
