I bid for a domain at an Godaddy auction. Won auction and immediately paid for the domain. The cost was just under $30.00. That was February 3, 2016.

My auction dashboard had the domain as one that I did not have a winning bid. Today, 5 days later, I see the domain price was refunded. No explanation given.

This domain has almost zero backlinks and presumably no type in traffic.

What the F*ck happened?

recently? NameCheap even addresses this specific question and says after day 18, not possible:

"GoDaddy has a non-guaranteed 18-day grace period for most gTLDs (e.g. for .COM, .NET, .ORG etc.). After the grace period for these extensions, the domain is dropped in 'redemption' period, and you cannot transfer it: you will need to recover the domain with GoDaddy. Only after the domain is renewed with them can you initiate the transfer."

@NameYourself - You can't quote another Registrars ToS at me as being GoDaddy's ToS. What does GoDaddy's ToS say. OK. I'm done with this conversation. If you don't accept what I'm telling you. that's fine by me.

Here is a timeline of the GoDaddy process -

- 18 Days past expiration the domain is moved from your control panel into the Expired section.
- 26 Days after expiration the domain is listed on GD Expired auctions as a 10 day auction.
- 36 Days after expiration expired auction ends. The domain still can be renewed/transferred for another 7 days.
- 43 Days after expiration domain is moved to new owner, if not renewed.

If you renew the domain @ GoDaddy 19-43 days past expiration it comes with a redemption fee that varies depending when it is renewed. It can be up to $80 + renewal fee.

However, you can transfer the domain out until the last second. All you have to do is go to the expired section, unlock the domain and get the AUTH code then submit a transfer at another registrar. Most of the people who let domains expire then renew them do that.

I have gotten some decent names from expiring auctions at GD. But I always know that the owner could possibly renew it and if they do, GD will refund my money.

@stub @bmugford - thanks! I did not know this but it is certainly useful. Stub, not trying to cause an argument, just stating the facts as I have read them. If what you say is true, it is extremely useful. I will test one to find out, thanks!

@NameYourself - You should. But just to be on the safe side, don't choose one which is right on the limit of 42 days. Make it 41 days or less :)

PS: I didn't think you were causing an argument. But it gets tiring repeating oneself. Especially when you are using another registrar's ToS in support of your PoV about another registrar. It's always better to go to the horses mouth :)

It's bang tidy up to the minute market info for the domain owner for <$80. They get to see what the domain would have reached in a public auction without losing it. If they own another 100 domains of the same type this is valuable information at negligible cost.

Happens all the time.
