If you’ve visited a crypto company’s website recently, you’ve probably visited a URL ending in “.xyz” instead of its cheugier counterpart, .com. From fintech Block, formerly known as Square, to venture firm Paradigm, to blockchain startups like Mirror, .xyz has become the go-to URL ending for many web3 companies. But what does it mean, and why has it caught on in the web3 space?

.xyz, released to the public in 2014, first surged in popularity one year later when Google parent Alphabet decided to use it for their rebranded website. The internet behemoth had run into an increasingly widespread problem — the .com URLs for their brand were already taken, with BMW’s fleet management division using alphabet.com and American Broadcasting Corporation at abc.com.

So Alphabet decided to open up shop at abc.xyz, which presented an “unlimited branding opportunity” for its “futuristic company,” Daniel Negari, .xyz’s 30-year-old founder and CEO, told TechCrunch in an email. Now, .xyz may be one of the top five top-level domains (TLDs) in the world by traffic, according to the company’s own DNS data.

Well, this industry is dynamic as every other industry. Life is changing, so the status of extensions can't be the same forever.

.IO never really made any sense, whereas .XYZ has a "and everything else" type suggestion to it, but .IO is just.IO

Either way, we're going to see .IO type trends in 2022 for .XYZ

If you want to be a "domainer", it doesn't really come down to whether or not you like a domain or a domain extension, it's about predicting future trends and making money off of that.

Regardless of how I feel about the .XYZ extension, I know that it will trend up significantly in 2022. Therefore I will be spending some of my time and money on .XYZ to be ready for that upswing. The same way I have done in the past with .info, .biz, .us, .co and .io. All those extensions had their up trending years and if you were able to buy ahead of time, there was money in it.

I'm not saying don't buy and sell dot xyz. In fact I said a small percentage of very smart domainers WILL make money from xyz domain names. I'm ALSO saying I don't like the extension in the slightest and I think the xyz bubble will burst like dot biz because companies will realise it's confusing and pointless for most people and they will stop using it. At THAT point many domainers are likely to lose a substantial amount of money invested. It's only a prediction. The festoons stole my crystal ball. Round and round and round she goes where she stops no one knows.....

If a potential buyer asked you if they should use dot xyz for a cake shop would you lie and say yes just to get a sale? I wouldn't. Ripping people off isn't in my game plan.
