One of the important news last week for WordPress community was the donation of domain WP.org to WordPress foundation by Syed Bakhi – the founder of WPBeginner. It is a commendable decision. He said in his blog post:
Many of you may experienced the redirect of WP.org to WPBeginner.com in past. It is a great 2L.org domain. WordPress is one of the most popular CMS and has very strong developers, designers, and writers community.

WP is a perfect short name for WordPress used heavily in news, at social media and in general discussion.

What you do think about this decision?

Is Wordpress - Non Profit Organization?
    If Yes - Good Decision
If No - Why giving free.

The Foundation I believe IS a non-profit, but the .com version is not. They are separate websites. The .org version already owns www.w.org and it forwards to wordpress.org too, just like wp.org now does.

    they own wp.com , right?

so I think he may have been somehow "convinced" to give it away

Call me a skeptic but I believe Wordpress bought it from him and required that he sign a non-disclosure agreement.

If that is the case, why would he publically admit that he actually donated? Isn't it against NDA?

He just got free advertising for the life of wordpress and his site, how much do you think that move was really worth? My guess is more than the domain was worth that move just guaranteed him an income and probably a very very good one.

He's a domain name investor (read Syed Balkhi's bio), blogger, and a successful businessman, so he knew what he was doing. He left alot of money on the table but as someone rightly pointed out, received/receiving alot of free press/mileage will make up for his good deed/action IMO :P

Yes, that is the point! The amount of FREE publicity, he got, is worth more than domain name. He is already successfully running a top WordPress website - wpbeginner.com. So it is like multiplying the profit.

He said he donated it publically to prevent rumors that it was purchased from Wordpress but it is hard to not suspect that it was.

In case you have been living under a rock, Wordpress has been trying to block websites from using WP in their domain names if those websites are about Wordpress.

Not going after WP.org from the get-go hurt their case and purchasing the domain would damage their case even more. Hence an NDA and public announcement (about 'donating' it).

So in a nutshell, I believe he was either forced to "donate" it through legal actions that haven't been made public or that he was compensated in some way, even if it wasn't for strict cash.

For me it's common sense but sometimes strange things happen, and common sense isn't always common.

I don't have time to dig through the details but I believe there had to be some sort of arrangement, even if it wasn't for strict cash.

I believe he was either compensated in some way or forced. I don't think a simple press release about him donating the domain would recoup enough money warrant a 'donation'.

First of all, WP is not a trademark. So WordPress doesn't have any legal ground to block website using 'wp' keyword. There are thousands of website with 'wp' keyword - even I own one too wppaid.com. Here is what WordPress foundation says:

Secondly, lets not look for the negative side always. The world is already full of idiots. Lets appreciate those who do something for the community.

I read a press release about Wordpress trying to enforce their WP rules for domains. I will double check.

    You're actually right.

I read a lot of news articles but have only read a few about Wordpress. I am wondering if it was an article by DomainGang.com or something nefarious. Wordpress's policy is the opposite of what I read.

Sorry for the inconvinience. Here is a link to their domain name policy:
    https://wordpress.org/about/domains/

Good people are hard to come by depending on your position in life but I guess you are right, he just wanted to donate a great domain for a good cause.
