Would you monetize a terminal illness domain?

If so, how?
If not, why?
Would you develop it, or park it and wait for a nonprofit organization to buy it?
Maybe you are the charitable type and would donate it?

Looking forward to your thoughts :)

It depends on the disease or illness. If the illness has something that causes it and it's like a drug or product, then it could be good for running ads or selling to a law firm. ONJ(Osteonecrosis of the Jaw) is like this (Google it, but don't use Google images on this one... trust me on this!).

For other topics ads for medical care and doctors could produce revenue.

But I would not hold out much hope for selling to a non-profit organization. The large ones with money already have domains and the smaller ones generally have little or nothing to work with.

I'd be happy to talk about it on or off forum if you want to...?

Don't write some schlock piece on anything that is a real disease, condition. Sometimes people lose sight of the fact that there are real people searching for real information are looking for valued information.

I'm not against people making money - however, there could be devastating effects (maybe legal ramifications) if you provide erroneous or misleading information that is not legally verified.

Depending on the quality of name I would either try and allow another party to use it or prevent the wrong party from using it. I've talked to enough people to know that trying to donate a domain usually doesn't work because charities are framed in a way that it's easy to turn over and use.

Could be wrong :)

Ditto on that. Aside from the ethical issues, you would open yourself up to a lawsuit if heaven forbid someone read something on your site, tried it, and had a bad outcome. Even doctors can get sued if they offer advice online (because they haven't examined the patient and don't know their medical history.)

If you do develop a site on it, research everything you write (reputable medical sources, not wikipedia), generously link out to authority sites, and have a BIG disclaimer that this is not medical advice and that you should consult with your physician before doing anything.

If any pharmaceutical companies have or are developing drugs to treat the condition you might be able to sell it to their marketing dept or agency, but don't be surprised if they don't want to spend budget on a keyword domain and/or prefer a brandable name they can pick up for reg fees.

Of course :) I would never give bad or wrong advice. I think building good, factual websites, no matter what the topic, is essential to monetization. Anyways, I noticed there isn't a website where people can go to discuss this disease, so I was thinking of creating something like a forum where families could interact and get support from each other (the disease rhymes with "heroderma figmentosum"). I have no personal stake in this disease, so if my time is better spent developing a more monetizable domain...then I obviously want to do that. And given that there's no cure for this disease, it sort of makes it hard to sell a product or service for it (which affects PPC)

If you don't register it, I will...! :)

If it's what I think it is, there are some sites that mention it, but if there are no sites that are just about the disease then I think it would be worth investing in. I would make a site and collect information, link to other sites that have information, and put ads on the site.

Even terminal patients need to be taken care of. Plus if someday it is found that the source of the disease comes from a product or type of job, lawsuits or claims may be possible which should result and lucritive advertising from lawyers. If not, you are still helping people. :)
