Epik announced forever registrations, a registration where you can secure a domain name in perpetuity. .COM can be secured at Epik.com for the one-time, all-inclusive fee of $420 regardless of where a domain is presently registered. Eligible forever registrations at Epik include free privacy protection, theft protection, forwarding services and unlimited subdomains all at no additional โ€ฆ [Read more...]

You could pay $420 for a "forever" .COM registration, or just pay $100 or less for 10 years and have another $320+ left over. The amount of time this would take to pay for itself is just ridiculous.

I mean if something drastic happens to the price of .COM, the business model is not sustainable anyway. You really think a company is going to be able to sustain massive losses because they got upfront money a couple decades ago?

I don't see the value added for consumers either.

I didnt see this thread here.

I posted this reply a couple hours ago at TheDomains.com

No, not for $420
That is 50 years of renewals.

10 year renewal periods are just fine at a total of $85.

So it is for the name it's self as long as it is held at Epik and as long as they are in business, or as long as the associated registry allows renewal of said domain.....now only if I had decent name.....

A good marketing gimmick but who know what happened after 50 years. :xf.laugh:
What if blockchain took over DNS structure in the next few decades:dead:

I could see some old timers that still reg with Netsol doing for this. I have hosting customers dating back to the late 90's that STILL pay Netsol for domains at their annual renewal rate.

This has been available at Epik for a while. Although 80% of my names are there, this is not something that I would ever have the need to take advantage of.

As Frank says above, my life span in combination with the fact I do not own an L or LL or prime one word domain (I have several 'ok' one word domains) makes this impractical.

But for a person owning a letter, number or prime one domain that wants to take advantage of leasing (something I have done at Epik) it is a super way to show the lessee that a name will be available to them in perpetuity. It gives them confidence that any money they spend branding a name and building a business wont be lost due to an unexpected interruption or drop of the domain.

I like the idea but the price should be lower. I think this is good for big companies that would not want to risk their domains expiring. For example, imagine TIME.com's domain expired, the hassle and cost of getting that back would be far more costly than the $420 they can pay and forget about the renewal.

For the rest of us, I think the price is too high, if it was $200 and I had a good business on the domain, I might consider it.

That's very true.. I guess they should have a clause that if epik.com ceases to operate they should do the following sort of calculation. The below hypothesis is that we pay for life time registration and epik goes bust in 25 years.

$420 paid - 25(years registered)* $10 (current yearly fee) = $170 - $16 (on original amount processing fee of 3.9%). = a refund of $154 due to the customer and the ability to move to another registrar.

Another example:

$420 paid - 50 (years registered) * $10 = $500. No refund to customer but coverage of transfer fee to another registrar.

Something like the above would inspire greater confidence. However, if Epik go bust with no capital then even the above cannot be possible as they'll have nothing to pay out so the problem remains . They would probably need to have an audited process in place where they reserve a certain amount of capital to cover such a scenario.

However, I doubt this will happen as the benefit to Epik is an injection of cash that they can use to re-invest. Holding a reserve of capital to cover a bust scenario will remove that benefit.

Nice idea for end users with domains that they make a living off but these people usually renew for 10 yrs. So, for this to start picking up pace it will need to wait till each of those domains come close to its expiry. Could be a year, could be 10 yrs from now, or anywhere in between.

Also, knowing that registries do not support this kind of renewal, the registrars would have to hope for the continuity of bringing new domains to get renewed forever.

Lastly, I can see it crashing but that could be in a minimum of 300 yrs or so lol.

We can do lower for Bulk Forever but for retail customers this is a sensible price. End-users at Epik routinely pay $35 per year for .COM, full-service and all-inclusive. Domain investors at NamePros all pay domains at cost. Anyone at NP who does not have an Epik account yet, just PM me your email at Epik after setting up your account and we'll set you up with NP pricing.

Here is the full post for anyone looking for it:

https://epik.com/blog/forever-domain-registrations.html

It includes an interview:

744 views on the video already so that is somewhat cool.

Word on the Forever registrations is spreading and registries are starting to give us their pricing for Forever registrations. For example, we just secured Forever .TUBE pricing from the registry for $219. How many of you would buy a .TUBE domain if you knew you could get if for say $219 forever? I am talking about GA names but still there are some great non-premiums out there.

For example, right now someone can go to Epik.com and but ExtremeSports.Tube Forever for $219. See here:

I think there are going to be some smoking deals on Forever registrations as the registries get on board with Forever registrations that are GA names. Stay tuned. We'll announce the Forever deals with the registries as we secure theme. Rami Schwartz CEO of .TUBE confirmed the deal on .TUBE on Friday.
