I've been researching some domain names with Wordtracker's free keyword tool and with Google keywords tool (set on "exact") and am getting a massive difference in results.

With Google keyword tool results for a two word generic are:
local (US) search April > 30,000
Global monthly > 40,000

Wordtracker's free keyword tool:
zero

I realise these results are never 100% accurate, but how can they be so far apart?
So how accurate is Google keyword tool?
I would have thought they are in the best position to know about search results...

I would trust Google Keyword Tool any day over WT. But sometimes there are still issues that clearly don't make sense. Hard to look more into it without the actual term.

Without disclosing the name, I can say it's an accommodation/destination combination.
So I can understand there would be seasonal variations.

Thanks for your thoughts, Brad.

Google is more reliable than WT, but you have to be careful, because Google too sometimes reports completely wrong data.

Third party tools like wordtracker and keyword discovery are limited because they spit out keywords that may or may not produce results for your specific website. Plus, the data is available to everyone on the Web, so where's the competitive advantage?

For my money, the data from your own “private” server logs is arguably the most reliable source for keyword analysis and keyword discovery.

Cheers!

WordTracker was made obsolete when Google opened their keyword tool.

I've had several instances where Google's tool was off...way off - costing me time & money. Is there a tool out there (even paid) that doesn't pull data from google? I'm guessing that's still the best place in town to get it...

From personal experience wordtracker is a hell of lot more accurate than Google Keyword tool. Google is a good gauge to find keywords that make sense but in fact the keywords are skewed when looked up. Wordtracker pulls data from major metacrawlers that use all major search engines, including google. From a day to day basis i would trust Wordtracker over googles results any day.

What exactly are some of you saying WordTracker is more accurate at?

Reporting Google's search figures better than Google does?

When comparing Google KW tool vs Wordtracker I think an important question to ask is, where does the data come from? Google have a market share of over 70% in the US. Now that is A LOT of data.

My problem with WordTracker is that its "predictions" comes from searches on meta search engines, dogpile and metacrawler. Give me a name of 1 person who use meta search engines?
