I wonder what the RIAA or BPI will make of what ofcom are looking to possibly legalise.

Gadgets which transmit MP3 players' output so they can be heard on FM radios may become legal in the UK.

Communications regulator Ofcom is holding a public consultation over the issue until September.

Using iTrips and other "low-power FM transmitters" is banned in Europe as their low-power transmissions can, in theory, interfere with legal stations.

I am sure they will get quite vocal if it looks like it will go ahead. Surely they will see it as piracy (if you can pick the signal up so can everyone else within a range)

I suppose playing loud music at a free concert or party is piracy too.

what a facetious response.

broadcasting music in a way that others can hear it is piracy UNLESS you pay royalties to the band and have a license. I don't see your point regarding a free concert as how can a band be done for pirating their own music (and if another band plays their song they are liable to pay a fee).

It's not what you're picturing... it's just a device that sends out a signal (barely 3 feet in most cases) so you can tune your FM radio to that specific station and listen to it over your car radio. It's not like you're broadcasting the signal over a radius of a couple blocks or miles. These devices have been legal in the US for a long time and the RIAA hasn't done anything about it because it's really not an issue.
