There is an understandably obvious understanding that .us was never a potential replacement of .com, but what about .uk? The current extension is .co.uk, to me it makes sense to shorten the extension to .uk, but that seems to be a long term investment as .com is by and large the alternative. Will uk businesses ever make the switch to .uk or will it remain an extension for those within the uk?

with long term investment, I think you should buy all, both .uk and .com, each will have advantages example uk for local and .com for global

The english public have learned to type in the .co.uk, most ads will have this extension, gonna take a while for change on a big scale imo

I doubt people swithing to .uk. They are very much used to the use of .co .uk and you can take for example, as they are not much interested in the .uk. I think .com will he the best alternative for them if they can still get the EMD of the same domain in .coms

I really cannot see .uk taking off. Most people here think it's a mistake.

Very odd, considering domain names were created to shorten addresses as opposed to longer numeric IP addresses with multiple dots.

"Created to" yes - but that doesn't dictate how they are used in reality. The telephone was invented to broadcast orchestral music over wires. But that's not how we use them.

Correct, we have progressed and not regressed.

I think a better example would be the Concorde. It was new, looked great, made travel more efficient but had one fatal flaw...it was too expensive to implement on a large scale. As a result, over time its use was phased out and travelers continued to use normal jetliners. I am not saying this is the case for .uk but I strongly believe that .uk is in a similar position. For this particular cctld extension to be successful its use has to be promoted from day 1 and by day 1 I mean grade school because you have to condition the masses to want to use the tld to make it normalized by the time your target age group has the most buying power. Although it may eventually take off, I do not foresee it happening for the next 15 to 20 years.
