Why is it .co.uk and not just .uk?

This has been buggin me for a while, how comes America has .us extension and so do most other countries - but the UK has .co.uk ? Why is it not just .uk?

I wouldn't mind seeing a .uk extention. Does anyone know if there's any plans for one being released in the future?

none load for me. It looks weird seeing just .uk though when your used to .co.uk

I think you need to know the sub domain too but the www works for some

Im confused. From what I see, Some on this thread are speaking like... "I would buy a .UK name if it was .UK alone... not .CO.UK though cause it's useless".

If you want .CO.UK names... then get them! They're steaming hot right now, millions of registrations, 4th most popular extension (1 =>.COM, .NET, .DE, 4=.CO.UK).

Don't push it aside because its got two parts to the extension.

There is no need for the stand alone .UK name extension... any Brit will tell you that they don't expect it to be .UK. It's .CO.UK.

.police.uk also has subdomains for regional police departments. Obviously you cannot reg them yourself, so don't think of buying london.police.uk and selling it to the cops
