discuss Will parking pages kill .coms

OK - "kill" is a bit excessive, but I'm finding that a lot of the keywords that I would like just resolve to parking pages. I find this annoying, and not very useful, as most of the links are often of no relevance to the domain name. Now that we have keyword TLDs, do you think that there may be a shift towards the use of these where the .com name is "wasted"? I say wasted because there have been a few threads about parking revenue reducing.

Short answer: no, it's an old problem.
And it's not like all the premium keywords in new TLDs are available, and for cheap. Sure, some people will find something good enough for their purpose. But the most coveted domains are always taken anyway.

I'm thinking of registering another gold name, and the keyphrase .com is owned by buy domains, they also own englishgold(dot)com. Now that Google is hijacking direct navigation, there seems to be less of an advantage in owning a .com for natural traffic. Of course, if you are going to develop the site, then I still think that the .com gives you more credibility, but I wonder if the ubiquitous parking pages are diluting this. I hope that I can help to avoid this by developing mini-sites, but it will take a lot more than my few sites to make a difference.

If you develop the site with good content and regular updates you will out rank parked pages in time. Especially with a .com I think. Google algorithms are programmed to grab and crawl new content. A couple hundred on an Adword campaign also draws traffic. You can set the keyword bid to grab top search returns.

ah. ok. I don't know. I don't think that would be the case at least now.

It would be more frustrating for a surfer to type .to or .word or .net because they are less likely to resolve and a parked page is still better than nothing I guess. Also they are more likely to be parked if registered(higher% speculator owned) Even the ones that redirect to the brand(protective) redirect to the .com

Parking pages exist because there is a lot of valuable undeveloped land out there.

You've confirmed my point in your post - if the good land is undeveloped but not available for development unless high costs are incurred, then prospective users will look for alternatives. This is one of the reasons bricks and mortar shops arfe closing in favour of Internet businesses.

I understand your train of though on this. The first answer you got from Kate is likely correct, no, the parked pages won't kill dot-coms. What does kill any TLD though is the inability to contact the domain holder. So a parked page is fine and dandy, but an enduser is going to move on if there's no easy way to establish communication with the holder.

Most of the other keyword TLD's are also going to parked pages, because the majority are registered by domainers. So it's not like they are offering anything better than the parked dot-com's anyways, unless they happen to rank better in search results.
