If iphone can be used as a web browser for regular .com extension, would this affect the .mobi extension?

Correct me if I'm wrong! :-/

I Believe that subject has been thoroughly discussed in 2007.

I think we can let the subject rest now.

Brief answer:

Yes.... it's having a positive effect on .mobi because iphone users are the guinea pigs for the 1st round of mobile web testing & they are finding that sites built especially for small screen devices are much better to use & navigate than desk-top .com sites...

Thats it in a nutshell.

The iphone itself will not kill .mobi The iphone along with all the browsers capable of rendering webpages similar to your home pc will definitley hurt it imho.

How many times will the argument go round and round and round (yawn)

The .mobi interface is about delivering purpose built sites for small screens.... it doesn't matter that the iphone can display full web pages... if you have them on 'page view' you can't read shit...

If you pinch & squeeze you have to scroll left & right & get frustrated trying to find your spot just so you can get a readable font size... .mobi compliant sites are more usable, more navigable at 'page view' than any other site... (regardless of whether they use the .mobi extension) its the compliant sites that work best... any site can be made compliant but .mobi is a trustmark & its new & trendy

Kids (the adults of tomorrow in case anyone forgets) love 'new' they will embrace the branding, embrace compliant sites & hence the ROI on .mobi domains will be quite adequate! ;)

the iphone and it's users will not create nor kill the .mobi space, the thousands of companies around the globe and their marketing dollars will create the .mobi space.

I think (hope) you are right. I attended a developer seminar for the iPhone a few months after it was released and even though Apple in their ads was pushing the full websites, during the seminar it was all about developing for the smaller screen.

.com I think is better with the site automatically adapting to the smaller screen but .mobi is gaining familiarity due to the iPhones success.

As an owner of a iphone, not once have I ever used a .mobi site instead of the .com due to the .com not displaying correctly. And quite honestly a lot of the developed .mobi sites look horrid in comparison to many of the media oriented .com's on my phone. Not that all phones display the same as an iphone and not that more than 2% of North America mobile users have them, but for setting the future, the .mobi tld I think is a little late.

just my .02.

I understand your concerns... however, I put this to you;

mTLD released .mobi in 2002, big companies developed some content & a few smaller ones followed suit....

They waited...

They promoted.....

They waited......

They waited some more....

The smaller sites were abandoned....

The big companies waited...

The big companies abandoned the idea

In 2006 the first devices that could actually make use of mobile websites started to appear...

mTLD promoted themselves all over again.... with the limited funds they had left from blowing it all 4 years too soon.

No-one listened.... been here before they all said...

Would .mobi have been a success if the extension was released early.. so content could be developed in time for the devices when they came online...

I doubt it, I truly doubt it... its great to summise that the platform would have been better if it had a running start with oodles of content ready to roll but the truth is; content is best served fresh... it's the setting up of a strong delivery platform that matters.

We have that now in 2008.... we have everything bar the content... if I remember rightly thats just how the internet started off... over the years more & more people jumped on board...
Leading to more development & more visitors, leading to more development.

Now that the process has started there is no reason to doubt that everyday from now on there will be significantly more mobile content than there was the day before... the growth will be exponential; just as the desk-top internet was...

.mobi may have been launched a little bit too soon if you want my honest opinion... but not by far, in fact not by far at all!

There is now nothing standing in the way of the success of dotmobi... if someone builds a bridge to get over a river, it won't take long for people to give up going the long way round; even the most stubborn long-in-the-tooth die-hards will eventually give up....

When that bridge is there, staring you in the face; it's hard to ignore... what is the point in explaining or marketing the long way round when you can just get a .mobi for a few dollars & make it simple, standardised...

Thats what none of the alternatives stand a chance of doing... making 'their way' a brandable, standardised way...

.mobi has a lot of work to do but its the only brandable solution...

You cannot build a new site with a new domain and then stick m. /mobile to it... whats the point?

If a domain (.com or cc code etc..) is available for a new site, it is very likely that the .mobi will be available too..... total investment $20.00
You can build one site for all users as long as it's .mobi compliant.

The alternative is to use a .mobi where the .com is simply not available... that precludes the use of m. /mobile in the 1st place because the site owner doesn't own the .com

Then there are existing businesses with a brand to protect... they have a .com valued at several $1,000's & have built a brand on it...
Tell me why any business with a turnover of more than 3 shillings per annum is going to ignore .mobi & stick with the m. /mobile solution?

For a start, they've regged the .net / .info & cc for self-defence... the first thing they'll want is their .mobi if only to stop someone else getting it...

Ok, they're happy with the m. /mobile solution... what now? They regged the .mobi to defend their brand, do you really think that they are going to build a compliant site and NOT point their .mobi at it...

Whichever way you look at the argument there are already too many big names promoting their .mobis for the rest of the world to turn their back on them..

I may eat my words but I really do doubt that I will have to.

Regards

Gary

Funny you mentioning how horrid .mobi sites look, since most sites built for iphone don't look any better and arguably are about the same. If you take the time to look at the sites that have been built for the iPhone from www.apple.com/webapps you will find this to be true. Case in point (http://www.shotson.us/ - fully featured) vs (http://www.shotson.us/iphone/index.php - mobile) and most of the .com sites for the mobile look like the mobile version I mentioned. As for your use of fully featured websites, I seriously doubt that it loads as swiftly as you imply. Fully featured sites are just that, "fully featured" as such they are not designed for the mobile phone's screen size and yes you can pinch and stretch and take a magnifying glass to different sections of the fully featured websites, but that just gets old really fast.

Now in all honesty, this subject has been talked to death and it always seems to come back, my suggestion is that individuals that start this type of thread should start by stating how heavily invested they are in .com, after all that will show how biased these threads have come to be. I admit to be invested in .mobi about equally as .com. How about you?

Just like stock traders have an obligation to state how invested they are in a company or its competition before talking about a specific company- we should have full disclosure before having threads like these. I'm sure that will be a lot more interesting.

I couldn't agree more.... I don't expect any change from the naysayers though...

I have 75% .mobi 25% other TLD's...... with around 3,000 names in total.

& PROUD OF IT! ;)
