Yes.... it's having a positive effect on .mobi because iphone users are the guinea pigs for the 1st round of mobile web testing & they are finding that sites built especially for small screen devices are much better to use & navigate than desk-top .com sites...

And quite honestly a lot of the developed .mobi sites look horrid in comparison to many of the media oriented .com's on my phone. Not that all phones display the same as an iphone and not that more than 2% of North America mobile users have them, but for setting the future, the .mobi tld I think is a little late.
