Friday, March 09, 2007 By Jeong Ji-Yeon
Samsung Electronics will introduce WiBro to Tokyo and Washington, which have been the area of Sony Ericsson and Motorola.
According to the governmental office and the related office on 8th, it is expected that Samsung Electronics and KDDI consortium in Japan will be selected as a service provider of the next generation broadband wireless Internet, which the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Japan will announce in June.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Japan is planning to select a model service provider, taking WiBro as the standard technology by allocating 70MHz out of 2.5GHz to activate the broadband wireless Internet. 5 Japanese telecommunication service providers including KDDI, NTT Docomo and Postbank BB took part in the selection, and Samsung Electronics (with KDDI) and Posdata (with NTT Docomo) participated as the equipment provider.
A related governmental official said, "It is not decided yet even though the service proposal and related equipment technology by Samsung Electronics and KDDI seem better. But it is very meaningful that Korea is leading the standardization and the first commercially used technology is selected officially by the government in the telecommunication big power Japan."
Japanese government is planning to select 1 to 3 service providers for the model service in the second half of this year, and for the wide service by the end of next year.
Samsung Electronics starts the model service of WiBro with Sprint in Washington, US at the end of this month. Sprint, processing the WiBro service in coming January, chose Samsung Electronics as a partner for the service. The company is planning to have the model service in the main cities such as Washington, LA and Atlanta.
Samsung Electronics Information & Telecommunication managing director Lee Gyeong-Joo said, "35 companies in 25 countries are preparing for WiBro service, and the service will begin in Brazil and Venezuela in this year. The service will be expanded to the advanced telecommunication markets such as US, Italy and Japan. We expect that WiBro will make 4G standard technology in the near future."
