I don't get it: why is Sedo such a popular domain exchange? I'm interested in a name on Sedo yet I can't see what others have bid on the name AND I can't email the owner to ask a question. These seem like no-brainer features for a domain exchange. I don't get it.

It is popular because there are a lot of people in the exchange. Other exchange places with better systems just simply don't have enough people.

That's it really.

Furthermore, I emailed them over a year ago with a question about listing .JP domains. Still waiting on a response...

That's right. They were successful in bringing in non-domainer buyers to visit the site; the subsequent hoopla and domainer interest sort of just snowballed to the point where they are now the biggest domain auction site in town.

There are not many alternatives, afternic does not have the traffic or exposure of sedo

Well Domain Hop is a great place to use as well.

To ask a question of the owner, simply use the email in the whois.
Seeing what previous offers were is basically confidential information....I certainly wouldn't want it to be public if I was a seller. The seller has an option to send you a message indicating if they have received higher offers, but I don't think you can verify it.You can see if any other offers were made and how many, but that's it.

Yep, they're just really BiG, IMHO. :gl:
For addressing people's needs, customer service, etc. they pay the price a bit ... but for domain listings, eyeballs, etc. they do pretty well.
PS. Received a $500 Euro offer there y'day, but had to counter ... will keep you apprised.

To me Sedo is like a giant supermarket with very basic options, feel much more comfortable in management of my accounts with Afternic. Although Sedo has a better visibilty does it mean they sell more (number/amount) than Afternic. I doubt. As per Phptech' question is there any 2004 sales report available from Sedo ?

That's my biggest complaint about sedo - the lack of transparency regarding their sales record. Sure, they highlight their top sales, and claim that many buyers and sellers require privacy. But how many do they actually sell, and for how much, is a big mystery.

I don't buy the privacy issue, as a large sale is essentially free publicity to the transacting parties, while a small small sale is too petty to bother making a big secret out of. My guess is the real reason sales data is secret is to project themselves as bigger than they really are. Just my 2 cents' worth of wild-ass guessing, though. I could be wrong.

Yeah they do have 1 or two things that indeed, do suck

for instance, they charge ยฃ50 commission and $150 commission. Now i dont know what exchange theyre going to but, im going to the states soon, maybe they sell me a few $$ a that rate.

Anyway, i digress, Been getting a lot of offers through from them recently, mainly for my .sc regged. Yesterday i get one, 'offer $160', 'commission $150', you get '$10'...

What the F* is that all about.... Durrr. yeah ok i sell....

I have to say, their minimum commission and 10% commission rates are pretty fierce and probably loses them a good deal number of sales. *cough* especially when the buyer contacts you through whois after the negotiations at sedo go cold *cough*

Right, if I was interested in any name listed at Sedo I'd prob. contact the owner directly via whois info, better for the seller as they would save the Sedo fees/commission and possibly be able to sell below their listed price as a result.

Somehow, it seems to me that they are more after parking revenue lately. No doubt the have lost a lot of business because of the minimum fees beening so high.

I keep my WhoIs info uncloaked, and hoping potential buyer have some brains..:)

I would imagine PPC income is the lions share of their profit. They seem to keep a large percentage of the revenue however :(

For many reasons, AfterNIC is just a far superior exchange. I don't mean to sound like an AfterNIC evangelist but my experience with them has been mostly positive. AfterNIC would be perfect--for me, anyway--if they implemented some sort of screening for domain sellers. Great Domains verifies domain ownership before accepting any domains; a time consuming step but necessary, IMO. Maybe AfterNIC could employ a random auditing system, sampling domainers every once in a while for ownership verification.

I hope AfterNIC's new parking system generates more activity for their site. I refuse to list with Sedo.

One thing I've noticed about Sedo and I've mentioned before is that since they are the biggest game in town, they are also the most crowded. Unless the name stands out, it very rarely gets seen. I think I have 2 domains with 1 view each (from Sedo customers) versus the people who visit as PPC traffic. They want you to pay that $39 to get it featured, but I'm not real sure if that would pay off or not and can't afford to eat $39 unless I was sure it was a hot domain. AfterNic, though I haven't tried them, seems to be a more quiet place that has a bit more managable lists to go through. I do like their parking though at Sedo...
