I recently checked with .ph registrar and many fantastic domains were still available with .ph extension.

Whats the future you think with .ph? Why is there little interest in it?

what do we promote .PH as
"Pretty Horrendous"
"Pathetically Horrible"
"PotHeads"
I suppose .ph(one) may work
Pretty Horny gets my vote :)

I think it’s a good thing that this ccTLD isn’t being squatted on by speculators from around the world. Actually I believe al ccTLDs should be reserved for use by local people/companies. One day down the road people are going to wake up and realize that a handful of scammers got rich by pimping their ccTLD and they now have to pay over the odds to set up a website in their own country.

I have Philippine related names like jeepneys.com but not a single .ph. At <$7/year I can hold a .com for fives years instead of one with a .ph. The presidential term in the Philippines is six years. Being able to hang on to a name for 7-8 years and weather corruption, eruptions, revolution, or devaluation is a necessity.

It really depends on the name itself. I would rather hold a premium ccTLD name for a year than a crappy .com for 7 years. The problem with .com is that there are virtually no premium or even good unregged names left. Partly due to the somewhat higher regfee many decent generic ccTLD names are still available.

If we had a POTH award (Post Of The Hour) I would have just voted for that!

I wholeheartedly agree , too many believe a .com is magically worth a lot
Just because it is a .com regardless of the Name.
QualityNames.ccTLD are always better for SEO than a ReallyCrappyName.com

Years ago, the registry/registrar of .PH planned to market .PH as .PHone, and unrestricted. But the local IT groups in the Philippines wasnt so pleased about the idea. They intensely want .PH remain sacred just for PHilippines

Well, I'm glad that was the case :D I wouldn't want my country's extension to be overpopulated hehe :D

It’s true you’ll have a hard time finding a good unregistered .com but that’s irrelevant. You need to consider the total cost of owning a name. Assuming you’ll hang on to a name for two years that’s $70 for a .ph. If you paid $50 for a .com and two years of registration you’d be ahead of the game.

I appreciate there’s this mind set that paying “regfee” is the way to go. When you look at the numbers though this isn’t always justified. $35 is still $35; even if you call it regfee. Domain speculation is a business. Don’t get emotional about it. Do the math and go with what makes economic sense.

I appreciate that a number of people here believe ccTLDs are the future of the domain market. There certainly are ccTLDs that have developed serious value and others will follow. Not every ccTLD has this potential. Basically there are two ways a ccTLD becomes valuable. One is through a marketing gimmick such as .TV. The other is through solid economics

For a ccTLD to have economic potential the country must have the right balance of population, GDP, economic growth, and Internet usage. If the population is too small there won’t be a big enough market. If the GDP is to low there won’t be enough business to develop a strong online market. If no one’s online no one’s buying.

There are countries that beat the Philippines on all counts where names still haven’t reached any serious value. What makes .ph a better investment? I might understand if you live there or are developing a project targeted at that market. Even then an appropriately named .com could be just as good, even better. But as a purely speculative investment there are better places to put your money.

Sometimes, when I travel I forget to book my hotel early and all the good rooms are taken. I end up being forced to pay over the odds for a “Premium” room in a two star hotel. If I’d booked earlier I could have got a “Basic” room in a five star hotel for much less. I accept the fact that the price I have to pay for not booking early is an overpriced room in a bad hotel.
