I know that Co.uk is the most popular and most used extension for the uk market but my question is if you have a co.uk domain do you have to have a .uk extension too?

The .uk extension really hasn't taken off and more and more companies in the uk are buying and using the Co.uk extension. Would it be ok not to buy the .uk extension if you have the Co.uk version particularly if you have many Co.uk domains and then you would have to buy the .uk extension? Would there be any disadvantage?

Yes. There are no registrant geographical restrictions on .co.uk domain names. Second level .uk domain names registered to registrants located outside of the UK need an additional contact called a "address for service". Many registrars will offer this.

Is that why this is written on Whois? :
"Data validation:
Nominet was not able to match the registrant's name and/or address against a 3rd party source on 09-Jul-2016. And is that what makes the data validation"

Then how do one get the "address for service" in order to get the validation done

Data validation in *.uk

An Address for Service is required where the registrant is wishing to register a second level .uk domain name and does not have an address located within the United Kingdom. See yahoo.uk WHOIS for an example. The registrar should help you with it, perhaps by offering to let you use one they have, or should be able to assist you with creating one as part of the domain name registration process should you wish to source your own (e.g. subscribing to ScanMyPost.co.uk or making use of a UK solicitor). Obviously some registrars are more aware than others. Please see question 20 here.

These are what I found at Godaddy about verification of .co.uk domains:

Verifying Contact Information for .UK Data Validation Process
Why did I receive an email asking me to verify my contact information?
Nominet, the UK Registry, requires all .uk domains to have accurate and updated contact information. When a .uk domain is registered, the registry performs data quality verifications on the contact information.

During this validation — known as 254 Data Quality Validation Underway — Nominet will perform a 3rd party identity check on an organization name (or full name if you are registering as an individual) and mailing address separately. Nominet will not match a contact name with an address during this process.

If you own a .uk domain and you’ve received an email stating that you need to verify or update your contact information, it means that the UK registry has been unable to validate your organization name (or full name) and/or mailing address. There are two issues you need to address at this stage:

  1. If your contact information has not been updated in 30 days, your domains may be suspended and will not renew until you update this data. Once you update, the domains will renew. For instructions on updating your contact information please see Change contact information.
  2. If you believe that your contact information is, in fact, correct, you may email us a copy of your photo ID or a recent utility bill or recent bank statement with your name and address clearly displayed. Please be aware that the identification documents need to match the contact information on the domain.
Once you've completed verification of your contact information, any suspensions should be avoided. For further questions or issues, please email us at [email protected].

For more information on .uk domain names, please see About .uk Domains.

Non UK Registrants Should Note These:

Registration Requirements
Anyone can register .uk domain names on a first-come, first-served basis, but an address for service in the United Kingdom will be required for registrants who live overseas. This address must be listed as the admin contact for your domain name. This requirement does not apply for .co.uk and .org.uk domain names. follow the link for confirmation.

Thanks and Cheers
