.tv Why I'm canceling backorders

If you've been reading my threads on the name.com problem you ought to notice that I'm cancelling a lot of backorders. A few people have asked me why so I thought I would explain here.

Basically I no longer have any faith or hope that speculating in .tv will provide the kind of decent gain over the long haul that a domainer should expect. The occasional "big sale" isnt going to be enough to reverse the many small losses on acquiring and maintaining the reg on the likely number of names it will take to make that one big one possible. Its pretty clear, to me at least, that for making decent money going after good .com's is the way to go.

I belive it is still obvious that they are useful names for branding but I dont feel this is enough to justify continued participation in hopes of short term gains. I still have my project names and may someday do something with those, but thats not what succesful domaining is about.

Most everyone here will disagree with my assesment, so be it. Most everyone here is also looking to flip their names as quick as they can, some within days or even minutes of catching them. Others may take a longer view, maybe willing to wait a couple of years. While the .tv market experiences sporadic periods of heat I for one dont think it will ever get hot enough. But good luck!

If you still think .tv is the s*** then know that so far I've let go of over 100 backorders and I'll be letting another 100 or so go just as soon as they get the problems fixed. Now may be your chance to jump on name.com to get a handle on that special name you've always had your eye on. Give it a shot and, once again, good luck!

It's a shame that you have lost faith in .tv but I still have confidence in the extension, it might still take a good few years for things to take off more. But if crappy .co & .me extensions are selling, .tv should definitely have a future! .tv is way better than that crap.

Anyway, if you are liquidating your portfolio, feel free to PM me your names & your prices as I might be interested in a few.

yep. i've been collecting names for a project for the last few years. i've only posted about it maybe a hundred times.

many .co's get decent traffic. i find it hard to call an investment that pays for itself, sometimes several times over in a year, "crap".

problem is if you have to "belive" in an invesment, have to have faith that if you just keep hanging in their it'll pay off then you are little better off than someone sitting in front of a vegas slot machine. good .com names on the other hand can and do pay for themselves even in this post-bubble world.

for a good long while i liked the speculative prospects of .tv and now i dont. i still think they are fine names to use as brands and am holding a substantial number of them for that purpose. but i have almost zero expectation that i'll ever be able to sell them profitably. not to domainers or end-users.

i'm now having second thoughts about just canceling my backorders. in the last 2 days i've had 8 emails and pm's asking for just such a list. i think people who want a chance to own top quality names ought to be able to calculate what that chance is worth to them. and there are still have plenty of legacy premiums i'd like to catch (mostly of the geo persuasion) and i'm sure many of those particular backorders are being held by fellow np'rs. maybe we can create a swap meet or something. anyone interested in that?

.tv has had more time than .me & .co combined.
Just saying.

And TBH speculating on .me or .co is hardly a better proposition :imho:

Im interested mate.. I have had some good luck the last 12 months and made 50k (40k profit) on 3 .tv names, 10k profit on gold.biz and over 100k on a .com... I spend less than 2 hours a week on this and am an absolute newbie in some regards to the biz.. its a part part time hobbie... I only post this as a reminder that MANY people are doing ok in this extension.... maybe it just comes down to finding the right names..... luck plays a big part to.

Im interested in your backorders mate.. feel free to post or send via PM.

Keep some of your "gems" Fin and please hang around the forum mate. :)

How are you finding the buyers for your names? Are you only emailing Enduser? Or have any approached you?

Congrats,nice job

The name I sold and ran as my main business here for 14 years was P----RealEstate.com... When I got sick I shelved it and had literally hundreds of offers for it over 3 years until I decided to let it go to the right company at the right price.

It was also one of the only real estate .com's in the world that Rob Grant didnt own... That man had some great visions back in the day and still is the king of real estate internet today..

The vast majority of my domain sales are $250 to $1500 so I will agree it doesn't make sense to pay $1100 to backorder a .TV domain name hoping that someday someone else will want to buy it from you at an acceptable margin. On the other hand, if you can acquire a quality keyword domain for under $150 the odds are better. Today I lost a one-word .TV auction as it went above $150. Perhaps the "winner" ends up sitting on that name for years with noone willing to pay a premium price for it. IMO they did acquire a really nice domain at a good price but I am trying to be strict about acquisition cost - it's just another name.

I wonder how much Sunderland.TV is worth to the "hitman". Seems to be more than a couple of backorders, imho.
