Hexonet getting into the Premium .tv backorder arena.

Last July we wrote an article that explained what was going on with .tv with regard to back ordering premium .tv names. The article I got your back, I mean backorder explained that a few people had scooped up all the back orders using Name.com. Name.com has been the only company to offer drop catching for premium .tv domains. So if you owned a legacy premium and were paying $1000 a year, the strategy if you wanted to keep the domain would be to let it drop and pay a one time fee. After that if would be regular renewal pricing. Well a few people went in and got all the backorders, so the legacy owner would have to pay them, or keep paying the premium pricing.

Name.com does not allow for multiple backorders, so only one person controls the backorder. In the 2011 article I wrote how,

What came of this was back ordering roulette. Others started back ordering at Name.com who has been the number one registrar for .tv back ordering and drops. So now someone paying $1000 a year for a name was looking to secure the back order for $49.99 at Name.com.

When they got there, the name was already back ordered. So this put the registrant in an interesting position, abandon the name, seek out the back order holder, or renew for $1000.

Jim Holleran a long time .tv investor posted a thread on Namepros offering $200 to the holder of the back order for georgia.tv. No one contacted him so he paid the $500 and kept the name.

Dr. Chris Hartnett in an exclusive interview at Allthings.tv talked about how he dropped a bunch of premium names he wanted to keep but could not justify the premium renewal. Michael Berkens picked up a bunch of the domains up on the drop.

I asked another premium holder what he was doing ? " Renewing them all, fuck these vultures, fuck every single one of them."

Well now the game is changing. Hexonet caught some premium names lately including Sanfrancisco.tv and Hamburg.tv. I contacted them and they explained they are now approved for premium .tv sales but the process is not yet automated. Robbie Birkner explained to me they hope to have that process completed by the end of the year.

For now it will work like this:

Unfortunately we do not offer .TV Premium Domain Backorders in an automated fashion yet. This is planned for the first quarter of 2013. In the event you are interested in any .TV Premium Domain Backorders, then the temporary procedure is as follows:

a.) Whenever you are interested in a premium .TV domain, kindly send the domain to [email protected] and CC [email protected]

b.) Once received we will confirm the VeriSign Premium Price to you + 20%. If you agree, then we will place the domain in our backorder script and hope for the best.

c.) If the domain is registered successfully, then you have 4 days to provide payment otherwise the domain will be deleted again.

d.) If there a multiple backorders for the same .TV Premium Domain, then the domain will enter a private auction via premiumsale.com.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I was wondering when someone would blow the lid on this. Haven't used it personally but clearly if they caught those 2 geo domains then they are definitely in the game at the drop.
As for the legacy prem and backorder situation yeah this is really a crappy situation for the non-backorder-holding premium owners. The people that do have these names on backorders and are acquiring them tho Im not sure I would call them vultures really because they are just playing the same game and same rules. The fault and remedy for the unfairness (imo) lies squarely with the registry.

At this point, the domains can only be backordered in pending delete phase. I guess that will change in the future.

Comment Robbie left on Hybrid Domainer:

Thanks for the article Ray, this is greatly appreciated. We will shoot to have our .TV Premium Domain Backorder Product automated by the end of the year. Our goal at HEXONET has always been to automate as much as possible and eliminate potential sources of error. The only reason we started to offer .TV Premium Backorders ahead of schedule is that the pressure of our customers demanded it. For all those interested. HEXONET has two locations. Our head-office is in Germany and the other one in Vancouver, Canada. Our ICANN accredited registrar is 1API GmbH (a daughter company of HEXONET). If you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to contact me directly. Wishing all a great weekend.

there is no meaning to backorder there earlier as they allow unlimited bidders at every name, so everyone can backorder same name till one hour before drop

The advantage to early orders is so I don't forget as I'm scouring names.

what a joke!

perhaps if he'd offered a realistic amount, rather than an insulting sum, a positive reply may have been forthcoming.

now how long will he hold on (and pay for) this thing that he only obtained in speculation of an obscene profit? my guess is about 20 years till either he or his heirs come to their senses.

I guess Fin is off his "meds" again(lol)

another guy that'd rather see his bankroll broken before his pride.

heres a joke: what did the slow dumb shark call the fast shark?

"fuckin shark"

I guess Fin is off his "meds" again(lol) What happened Fin, you couldn't get your Medical MJ card:)) Just say .tv is stressing you out bro(lol)

It is not a matter of one person being smarter than the next, or even faster.

There "was" and "is" a complete lack of transparency when it comes to premium .TV domains.

Once the premium renewals were lifted, It was not made obviously clear to all legacy premium holders that their investments were in very serious danger. When the premium renewals were lifted, were the legacy presented with the buyout price (backorder) first without having to let it expire? Did verisign/enom inform legacy holders that only ONE person could place a back order if they do not buy it out right now?

Cybersquatters are scum. Far as I am concerned, the people whom targeted current domain owners and placed backorders for the remaining legacy .Tv domains are NO DIFFERENT, SCUM.

I have enjoyed being a part of the ".tv" group of domainers... but I supect some of you here have knowingly placed backorders for legacy domains that other members here own. All in a sad atempt to ransom and exploit other members that have probably helped you at some point in time.

Pretty sad.

-If you placed a backorder because you like that name, great, no problem. It happens all the time.

Domaining is all about opportunities, but lets not forget how we all got here, with insight, information and help from others.

I am not a lawyer, but the handling of premium domains is bordering on neglegence on the part of verisign/enom. Alas, i'm sure there is something in their agreement that relieves them from being responsible for anything.

I do not have any legacy premiums or backorders for legacy premiums. I wish all premium legacy holder the best of luck gettting their names back with the advent of places like hexonet who are willing to run auctions for multiple BO's, doing it the right way.

It's not funny at all. The domain game is cut throat and can be costly if you're not careful.

Those who bought .tv with premium renewal fees did so knowing the cost/risk involved. The fact that the terms changed is part of the risk. Because some took advantage of the new price structure doesn't mean they were targeting other members here. It means they did their homework and made a play to be successful at all costs!

In your opinion there are many that share Marlowe's opinion. Game is changing which is most important part to me and all that matters, I did not make the presentation to Hexonet but I can say we have been working on getting other registrars in the mix and its being discussed for the last few weeks internally and hopefully there will be a lot more competition to the game. Hexonet is the first step and a big one and glad to see them getting in the game.

that's not an opinion, that's an insult. that's why it's funny.
and insulting people isn't nice.
just because you don't like what some people do but it's perfectly legal that doesn't give you the right to insult.
but hey what do i know?

Yeah although I can certainly see why legacy holders would feel hugely riled I can't agree with the cybersquatter scum analogy. I dont think I have any of these legacy premium names and I certainly dont have any on BO. If I were to inadvertantly take one of these tho Id sure not want to be considered scum, rather just quicker and more informed than the next person.
One other thing I would say though is that purposely targetting the pockets of nearby people/friends/associates in your business, wherever that is, is never a good idea and I'd definitely avoid that at all costs.

I congratulate all who grabbed the premium backorders but I think the main issue is that it was not transparent... Im still pissed that I lost forsale.tv and someone else grabbed it for less than I was paying per year... I think ethically I should of been offered the buyout due to me paying $3,750 per year for 2 or 3 years... I think it comes down to ethics and enom have FA.

Hexonet is welcome and I hope some of the premium holders get a chance to try and get there names back after they drop them.. Up until now 4 or 5 people have the monopoly and whether you feel that is being a cyber squatter or an informed strategist is up to you.
