Apple Does It Again: Names It’s New HQ “Apple Park” Doesn’t Own ApplePark.com (or the .net or .org)
Coutesy Mike Berkens at TheDomains

In a Press Release today, Apple announced that its new Headquarters will be named Apple Park.

The new 175-acre HQ will have 12,000 employees in a ring-shaped, 2.8 million-square-foot main building which is clad entirely in the world’s largest panels of curved glass.

Apple also announced the theater at Apple Park will be named the Steve Jobs Theater. Opening later this year, the entrance to the 1,000-seat auditorium is a 20-foot-tall glass cylinder, 165 feet in diameter, supporting a metallic carbon-fiber roof. The Steve Jobs Theater is situated atop a hill — one of the highest points within Apple Park — overlooking meadows and the main building.

As in many previous cases involving products Apple failed to secure its matching .Com domain name before making the announcement.

Applepark.net is owned by someone in China.

Applepark.org is owned by someone in Copenhagen.

To be fair, this can be considered a bit misleading. While I agree it would be smarter to obtain the domains before making a public announcement...it's not like these domains were available to hand register, like this article makes it sound. Both the .com and .net have been registered for many years. So it's not like they made the announcement and then someone just strolled along and hand registered them.
