Why does any human need to drink water?

Because that's the way things work in our universe? Maybe in another dimension, we don't need to.

Same with domains.

you either do it on your domain or do it on other business's domain, so you need a domain to do business on the interwebs, that's why a business needs a domain

Let me tell you a small story. Yesterday I searched for furniture. Went in a lot of stores and asked every consultant if they have a site. 8 out of 10 don't have a site. One of those 2 has a poor, old and outdated site. And only one out of 10 has a developed site with the whole inventory listed.

As a buyer, I prefer to search what I like on the site, decide if there is smth interesting for me, and then go to store and look at the item I chose.

Walking the whole day in a store is not the best way for me, so I don't even think about that store.
And there are a lot of modern buyers who don't like this.

Now, think about this, 9 stores lost the buyers because they don't have a site, they lost money, they lost returning buyers.

And one more thing, the store that has the best site, also owns the generic domains of all the furniture they sell and some additional items they don't have atm but intend to import.

The usual issue with this, is website maintenance. You must have a dedicated maintenance guy doing the inventory list updating stuffs, price updates, uploading pictures of merchandise..., in short, you need an IT guy.

Even though you can pay a contractor/freelance to do it, there must still be someone who works with the store to collaborate with this freelance website designer on a regular basis. Sometimes they find it such a hassle. Other times, these mom-and-pop stores are so small business, maintaining a website is actually eating expense money from their revenue. Sometimes, even the owners themselves are manning the cash registers, they don't have the time to maintain a DYNAMIC website.

If you surf the internet, you can notice a lot of business websites that are merely STATIC and sometimes with very outdated inventory listing. They simply do not have the time (and perhaps money) to keep it fresh and alive.

Depending solely on a social media page is generally not a good idea, so it's good to have one's own site in conjunction with a social media presence.

Keep in mind that Twitter and Facebook could change their terms of service at any time, and start charging for business pages (if they haven't already). With someone else's platform, your business is at their mercy.

In 1980-1993 you can get away with not having a domain name. 1994-2013 you need a domain name/website so your company can compete in the global market.
