Why do they call it a party?

The US is in the election process, again. This year we will choose our next president. With all that is going on in the US and the world, this is possibly the most important election that I have experienced. Why can't these apes (candidates) talk about what is important. The mud slingging is so bad that I feel dirty whenever I listen to the news. Which begs my question, why are the democrats and republicans called parties?

Let's see if we can come up with some good anti-party names and/or mascots.
