Looking through expired domains I can't believe how many completely worthless domains have been registered. Like 100,000 a day. Are there that many idiots or is it just SEPS spammers auto registering names?

Indeed, many domains are used for spam... they have a very short shelf life.
There are many silly domains because they were registered for silly projects in the first place :alien2:

Domains having shelf life? I've been thinking of digital life until now :O

You remembered the slogan which proves how effective it is, In a way I agree with you but I would have to see the logo that's associated with the slogan, If it's nothing dirty I wouldn't have a problem with it, but then again I don't hire contractors by advertisements, google searches or out of the phone book, only by reference.

I don't remember the name of the company..Lol...I think the logo was of a cartoon girl holding a wire wearing shorts...maybe...However, still don't remember the name.
Anyhow, I just remember something to that effect of the tagline..Not sure exactly what it was, but it was something like that, along those lines..
I, too would prefer to go with a referral from someone I know if I didn't already have an electrician, or any profession for that matter...
For instance, and this is a big one for me, as I am terrified of dentists..I definitely, most definitely wouldn't pick one out of the phone book! NEVER! ...LOL..I would ask around to my family, friends, or people I think are trustworthy, and see if they had a good one. In which, that's how I found my new dentist...Word of mouth is the BEST form of advertising, and always will be :)

Some are used for projects, another aspect is that each week people see some 'crazy sales' that do not seem to make sense listed on dnjournal so there is a 'mine is just as good' mentality. Some is just bad judgement and so on ….

Inexperience. The goldrush mentality of striking it rich over night.

it's because hope springs eternal. Just like people get better looking at closing time, domainers convince themselves that scrub domains aren't so bad, and once they buy them, they convince themselves that they're actually sort of good.

it doesn't help to see purported sales of $2000 - $5000 on DN Journal for some truly bad domains.

unforunately many of us have had a portfolio filled with low value domains at one point or another. Having said that many folks start out by registering any good idea they may have, their dream for the name typically ends with the registration as they do not know how to develop the name into their dream, how to market it for sale or how to perform proper seo. In a way it is a revolving door where folks register a domain, pay someone to design a site for them, hire a so called seo professional and get burned by less than proper seo strategies.

There are companies that literally buy almost anything, see if traffic comes with their landing pages, and if not, they get dumped. Plus a lot of people think they can get rich quick with random domain purchases.

I swear drivingaroundtowndoingstuff.com would be great.. if only there were an end user. Keywords!

This is probably the best explanation for "silly" domains. You also have to realize that there are non-English speakers who are trying to register domain names in English. It's just a bigger challenge for them. :P

Imagine, if the internet preferred domains in a foreign language. Domaining would be much harder. People take these things for granted lol.

Pigeon crap domains appear to be the lifeblood of probably the majority of domainers. They can't possibly give them any revenue, but at least it gives them a hobby.

Different people different opinions. The world runs like that, so does the names...
