Hello to all NP members!

I have been trying to understand the BTC/Bitcoin/Cryptocurrency/Wallet etc. and such related domain names. Is it true that such names have been majorly trending in the .org TLD ?

I would love to understand and learn views from fellow NP members about the reason for this trend.

Isn't .org majorly related to non-profit Orhganizations and related names ?

Am I missing out on something here ?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
All my Bitcoin names are .coms. I guess the .org thing comes from the basic aim of Bitcoin, which was to escape the clutches of the banks and governments, and to place control in the hands of Bitcoin users.

It's a bitcoin company's "gimmick" .org aligns with all things socially good, non-profit,

If it's their attempt to be a non profit bitcoin biz. Perhaps a way to evade taxes ?

Big money + tax free profits? = Mo money! Mo money! Mo money!

Through my research I happened to cross many a websites related to this niche and found that there's a good bunch of them running on .org.

Your inputs would be appreciated on this.

I checked Namebio, couldn't find a lot of .org sales. Perhaps they build on .org because they are available for reg fee, and give a sense of trustworthiness ;)

I am aware that crypto/coin/wallet/exchange domains are trending, however, based on actual domain sales data it appears that .com is the extension most being sold.

According to Namebio data, in the most recent 30 days, .com is by far the most favored extension.

Here are a few links to namebio sales data for crypto/coin/wallet/exchange:

Coin - https://namebio.com/?s==MTM5IDM2MTM
Wallet - https://namebio.com/?s==MzM5IDM2MTM
Crypto - https://namebio.com/?s==czM5IDM2MTM
Exchange - https://namebio.com/?s==QDN5IDM2MTM
Ethereum - https://namebio.com/?s==YDN5IDM2MTM
Bitcoin - https://namebio.com/?s==ATN5IDM2MTM

Based on this data, .com is clearly the most favored extension used by this trending industry.

Crypto project founders are using the .org because they act as a "foundation", let me explain this.
All crypto projects aim to be decentralized, so nobody should be capable of controlling their situation once they are online and running (leaving aside 51% attacks).

So, the project founders aren't running a company, what they run is a non-profit foundation which in theory they commit to work on developing new features, patches, etc... for the coin/tech/token they're building. They receive money in most cases by getting some tokens of the same coin after the ICO/funding and after some vesting period.

Bitcoin was founded as a cypherpunk non-profit project. You'll most likely see .org domains being used by top currencies homepage with top teams developing them, but you won't see exchanges using the .org unless they are decentralized exchanges, you won't see top news resources using .org, they all prefer .com

Because these reasons crypto dev teams foundations prefer the .org domain for their coin.
