Thank you for contacting 123-reg

I can confirm that it is not possible to opt-out of the WHOIS database for global top level domains (such as .coms) without losing the ownership of the domain name itself."

I get this message from the customer care.

Is it possible to use an external privacy service? If yes, please name them below[reliable ones].

Yes, you can. DNOA.org used to offer this service (I think they should bring it back). Off the top of my head I cant think of another though.

So I'd need to be a DNOA member for that ? Or is the service free ?

i think the use of privacy on dnoa.org is still on hold
http://dnoa.org/memberbenefits.php
that's the current list of benefits and it's a paid membership to join

I am thinking this.

Transferring the name from the registrar to Moniker/Name,etc is better and they have privacy as well.

HTH

Yep.

Is there a problem transferring the domain name, the site is a developed one and I don't want to lose it.

You could also use a mailing address to give you a layer of privacy, you can get them for about $10 a month, e.g.

http://www.usamail1.com/rates.php
http://www.privatebox.co.nz

The price for the 1st one is really high. The 2nd link doesn't work for me.

so the 2 year free .com promotion has already expired on you? are you able to renew (pay) for this domain with them in the last year?

I registered the domain name during 2005. How would this help me with enabling privacy ?

I guess it depends on which country you are in. The price it gives me is $49.95 setup fee, which includes the first 3 months ( so really $20 setup, $10 a month ) and then $9.95 per month after that.

Where are you located?

Yes.

I don't understand why they don't allow it. I just checked out some domain names and they have been privacy enabled and haven't lost ownership at all. for e.g. porn.com, god.com

then if that's the case you're entitled to their whois privacy services, but tell them this straight if they don't enable your whois privacy then you have no choice but to move your domains to other registrar that offers free whois privacy as you really need them for your domains.

if they answer negative then initiate the domain transfer from name.com

The few privacy provider contracts I have read generally have some kind of clause which gives them ownership, but confers all the rights of ownership to you.

e.g.
"any available domain name registration that You designate will thereafter be registered in the name of DBP, as Registrant. In exchange for DBP becoming the Registrant"
http://www.securepaynet.net/gdshop/...ageid=domain_nameproxy&prog_id=domainsbyproxy

So, in the sense that the proxy agent becomes the registrant, I guess you could say that you have lost ownership.

Yes, I am thinking down the same line. I think it's better to transfer out instead of writing to them, I know they won't agree.

Maybe report them to Internic as well after I transfer out.

Report to InterNIC?

You can indeed either use some other contact data (e.g. business name, PO
box, etc.) or transfer to a registrar who offers WHOIS privacy services. Just
be aware of their respective pros and cons, especially the registrar's contract
on WHOIS privacy.

Yes.

Mostly all registrars allow whois privacy.

They sent back the same response again. I don't understand the need to keep the whois open.
