When we buy a name, the first thing comes to our mind is the name will have more value if it's developed. In realatity, that's rarely happened. Why? We're too busy!!!

The result is we end up with a bunch of good names (we think) and turn around and sell them because "we don't have time". Some we even forgot to renew ant let it goes back to the public. So, I think we need to decide who we are when buying a name: Developer or Domain Reseller.

To be safe - always think that you're buying and selling domains because the chance that you have time to develop the domain is very SLIM!

Just my 2 cents.

Gotta love the MOLE.

I think I look for BOTH. Lately, I have been looking at "simple dev projects,"
basic hosting and some PPC... TIME is a big problem here too!

Mostly, I'm just learning new shi* every day - that can be COSTLY ;)

Domainers Are Opportunists........

Hi,
All 'Domainers' are TLD Registrants but all TLD Registrants are not 'Domainers'....

Humbly...., with no intention to offend anybody.... I think being 'Domainers' we are all only "OPPORTUNISTS"... nothing less, nothing more, nothing else.... (seeking maximum return against minimum investment, in minimum time).

But, IMHO, when we develop a certain website, only to the extent of that website we become a "Value Adding" trader/reseller.... (Still, in most of the cases [unless website is developed based upon a sound business model OR out of some personal passion and is not put on sale] we remain the same CUNNING OPPORTUNIST......)..., this is the ground reality of this bubble world....

Regards.

I'm neither a Developer or Domain Reseller. I'm just a Junkie trying to get my Domain kick.

Domaining is an addicting habit and should be persued as such.

Oppurtunism is definetly one of the qualities required of a successful domainer if he/she is not going to depend upon sheer luck. But it is hard to think of any endeavor for profit, where oppurtunity is not central part of the equation.

Examining my own motivation, "seeking maximum return against minimum investment, in minimum time", was a large factor that initially attracted me to the game. (Along w/ a fair amt of hubris). Were it only this way. In reality,(a concept that I remember from another post somewhere), we only get to choose from two of the above.

Although I accept the oppurtunistic side of our endeavor and generally don't get hung up by it, I continue to get a tad defensive when the subject is brought up. In reality, there is nothing that needs to be defended- as you have indicated, it's just the way it is.

LOL -You know what adds to it - Sometimes you have an opportunity to buy the same domains (One's you've previously owned before) and it appears that most will try to acquire it again ..... Sentimental value is often taken over monetary ~

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have one sentimental favorite that I have tracked, and will be placing a backorder on, shortly.
On the monetary side, however, I had a name that I was trying to unload off and on over several months, had no takers, and it's now pending delete. I hadn't checked stats on it for awhile, but recently noticed that for the past few months, it has had enough uniques and revenue to justify it being a keeper. Will be trying to pick it up again. Gotta check those stat's more often if I am going to be a true oppurtunist! It's a real blow to miss an oppurtunity on a name that you already have regged.

I'm done"
