I think it really depends on what the goal of the site will be. .com is of course the ultimate, and will be accidentally mis-entered whatever you tell people. but .net is great if the purpose is communication or community building, and of course .org is de rigeur if it's any kind of not-for-profit activity.

Finally, if you're not living in the US, the country-level domains come into play. If you're French, you've really got to have the .fr domain for whatever it is, and the others are not as important...

I think to the non-geeky/nerdy people .com is better but if the site isnt for that then anything will do.

Right, ccTLD is the best option in many countries! And .net is actually superior to .com in some countries, since there are many languages, which are lacking the c character (except loanwords), but .net is acceptable anywhere - internet > net >.net

I like both .com and .net but anything that has some kind of traffic suits me fine, Just finding them is the hard part....
