the cheapest ones I have used that are good are namepros, namecheap, and godaddy. Find the thread on godaddy coupon codes and that will knock the price down for you. I know "saveten" takes off 10% which makes them like $8.30 a piece at godaddy, many more codes out there that may do better than 10% off, you can also get them for 1.99 if you needed to buy an additional product, if not find the best code to knock down the price. view http://www.registerindex.com/ for other registrars including pricing, and service reviews. Just keep in mind if it's dirt cheap customer service or features may be lacking, do your research and read the reviews from other domainers.

Moniker (talk to the CEO Monte and you can get special pricing: $6.85 for .com).
Some registrars like 1&1 will actually offer names at a loss (for $6 or less) but I would not recommend them (you get what you pay for). I think $7-8 is a decent price for a .com. Sometimes it's not worth the hassle just to save 1 buck.

I presume the special pricing is only for bulk registrations?
I need to register 2 dozen .com domains, would this special pricing apply to my needs?

since the price of a .com with GD is $5.23 with quick blog renewal loophole you would find an alternative difficult to find. IMHO there is no cheap reliable alternative to GD. If $8.99 is your marker then go with namecheap, their headline price is $8.99 but is $7.99 with coupon.

afterwards you go to 'payments and renewing items'
select quick blog
click renew now (adds 1 month)
add domain name
total = $5.23
if you are going to have 3+ names in the cart you can also select private reg for free with each name...the total for the private reg will resolve to $0.00.
so, reg names in blocks of 3.
