Hi,

I'm developing an auction-type website where there will be many auctions running simultaneously with continuous bidding, and I'm wondering what the best option for hosting would be.

I'm assuming I'd need a dedicated server, but where do you suggest I host / how much bandwidth required / etc.. ?

Thank you

If you're going to buy a dedicated server, I recommend SoftLayer.com. They are topnotch.

if you have yet to start the site, i suggest you start off with a cheap shared hosting plan (i personally use hostmonster - unmetered bandwidth and space, GREAT customer support) because sometimes sites aren't as active as you imagine they'd be (speaking from experience here). if traffic does start picking up then you can always upgrade to a dedicated host later on.

It's a waste of money to start with a dedicated server, honestly. As already suggested, begin with a shared hosting account and work your way upwards as needed. I'd personally steer clear of any unlimited/unmetered offers, but there are plenty of options out there for a good shared host. You might want to check out the offers forum or maybe do a search here on Namepros for some reviews.

I suppose that you need to specify your sizes. And post them in the request section. I'm suree there ypu will be able to get some direct requests.

Decent dedis you may get from gazzin.com, this company have them a lot and you are able to choose the one that will meet your needs. Moreover their support is fast and responsive and helpful.

You know, it mainly depends on your requirements to buy dedicated server or shared hosting. I suggest you to check out webintellects.com, serverpoint.com and vistapages.com and then choose the best one for you. Also the solution could be got from VPS hosting, these companies are flexible enough to meet your needs.

What is web application you are planning to use to organize that? I assume that you need to act with the search keeping that in mind

Check out dedis from razorservers.com, their CoreDuo 2 dedicated server line is effective in many ways. Prices starts at $79.95/per month all servers have good uptime and high performance.

Place your direct request in the offers section on this forum and you will get direct offers. I believe that is the best way grab short list of offers to consider.

Because Auction type website take lots of traffic per month, and a sufficient amount of Disk space also needed, i would recommend you only a dedicated server, may be you start with a small one with SATA drives and good amounting traffic to avoid any surprise suspension of services.

If you search around you will find a lot of great hosting solutions for your site. I know personally that even places like host gator, blue host and 1on1 are good but they do encounter problems at times too. Just predict what you might need as your business grows and make your choice for there.

If you are desperately looking for reliable company, I can advise you to check ahosting.biz dedicated server offers as this company is secure one. I would caution that while price is always a factor, you should realize that you often get what you pay for. They offers nice dedi specials.

Hosting Gator from my experience is compleate horriable. The ethics involved with lying to your customer see my article on overselling :

I'm pretty sure hes not sure what he needs. I suggest a vps as auction sites can use up quite alot of the cpu just depending on how many auctions are going on at one time ect.

I believe that the best start with shared web hosting (www.hostgator.com). Or if that is not enough with VPS account (www.webhostingbuzz.com). Dedicated server should be your last hope. (www.theplanet.com)
Good luck.
Once again a VPS is best bet. Auction sites are not good for a shared enviroment esspecialy at an overseller.

Dedicated is a strech as he wont have to many to start. yOUR BEST BET is a VPS for 2-3 months but plan on upgrading.

VPS.... I think that he neds at least get started with the tests. I'm pretty sure that shared account is the best idea for start. Surelly in a month or so you might need to upgrade. But now I believe that you do not need to pay more with VPS

To my mind, VPS would be more than enough. As for the company choice, there is no denying the fact that ncisp.net would be good company to choose. Their services are widely represented in the web hosting market.
