Where do deleted names go?

What happens when you delete a name within the 4-day grace period for new regs at Moniker? Does the name become immediately available to reg again? Does Moniker hold onto it for awhile? What about other registrars w/delete periods?

Sometimes they get snapped up by domain tasters/kiters to see if they have any traffic - if not, then they usually get dropped and can be registered again.

Thanks, Gazzip. How do tasters find deleted names? It's not the same as dropped names, I assume, which go thru redemption periods, etc.

if the name is any good the registrar usually winds up with them

Hmm, for me, the deleted names usually become available immediately.

What does the registrar do with it?

To the Great Server in the Sky of course!

Serious reply:
Some registrars are rumored to be collecting good names on their own account. Or they could auction them. But I expect the 4 day deletes mostly sooner or later are released and available to register.

Philosophy question:
Does a domain exist before it is registered?

(Reminds me of the Federal Reserve Bank.)

Anytime I've deleted a name at Moniker, it immediately shows a status of available (at Moniker). There might be a delay if your checking at another registrar, namely Godaddy due to their cached system.

Just deleted a bunch of names at Moniker and then did a search. They all showed up immediately as available to reg. So maybe that means they were no good or maybe Moniker doesn't hold them regardless...

If Moniker didn't register them for themselves it simply means they don't think its a good name to keep. I've found many names registered to moniker when looking up "whois" info.....in fact I've found names that I've dropped that's now owned by Moniker. I suspect all registrars do the same thing.

So far as I know there's nothing illegal about this....so why wouldn't the registrar grab a good name for themselves when it becomes available? Its good business....unless of course its illegal. Does anyone know?

I just wonder how they do this. Is it automated or do they have some guy hand-checking every delete to see if they want to keep it? The latter seems a bit impractical. Specially since names appear as available almost immediately upon deletion (at least mine did).

I also wonder still what they do with them, if they keep them. I mean, do you see names for sale that are registered to Moniker or GoDaddy or other registrars? Do you see parked names (presumably earning revenue) that are owned by registrars?

Most likely they hand reg the ones they want. They do the same with them as all domainers do. Although I've never bought one from a registrar I suspect they can and do sell names from their own portfolios. They also make a lot of money on parked names. Have you not noticed who the dns automatically is on a newly registered name? Some registrars allow the members to set up the dns automatically for whoever they want but if thats not done the dns and the profits from ppc goes to the registrar. I've also noticed the dns resets itself after a awhile back to the registrar's dns. This is not by accident imho. The registrar gets the ppc income unless its set up by the owner.
