I used to do well in math up till the geometry to calculus point where I wouldn't just accept any theorem to regurgitate.. had to challenge everything for that great discovery.. never found a breakthrough, which made me slower than the rest of the students..

One thing I found true is the concept called "Lowest Common Denominator"..

This is the only techie point for mobile phones I find that doesn't go obsolete..

Or, maybe I am just crazy.. *hachoo*

-------

..when DotMobi raises the "Lowest Common Denominator"

(The following is a speculation theorem only, what manifests may also take into account what seems practical and market/consortium dictated)

-------

Aside from DotMobi one day hopefully becoming known though branding.. there is still ongoing technical relevance that can by discussed here; even, with the Iphone revelation.

Did you ever think that the Dot Mobi standard can just be raised?

Technology will always advance..

The DotMobi creed is "works on all phones" - 3-6 billion mobile phones oncoming likely (biggest secrets=biggest money/power?)

So, in the future, whenever there is some advanced applet or applications, some genius program.. that doesn't mean that it will work on all phones, yet..

So perhaps in a few years, all the mobile phones out there in the world will have Iphone capabilities.. Then, Dot Mobi just raises the lowest common denominator to Iphone standards..

Then, there will be phones during that time that can do much more than the Iphone, however, they will just be advanced..

DotMobi likes to guarantee that it works on all phones.. (This is an identifier that can, in the future, set .mobi apart from all the other TLD's that go mobile)

..just keep raising the lowest common denominator

(Longterm viability, ongoing relevance)

Have a good day

:hi:

I may need to further digest parts of your post a bit more Yelo ... but I'll offer that developers are not likely to adopt to the limiting ".MOBI", as (due to the demand/desire and proliferation of super cool iPhones™ and other smart devices, as you mention above) they'd be catering to a shrinking market IMHO. :red:
These super cool iPhones™ etc. allow for a full & unrestricted web experience while out and about and "on the go" ... which is the future of the Mobile Web™! :yell: :talk: :imho:

See you soon.

Hi Jeff

You bring up some very good points..

I have just been trying to solve this DotMobi math equation to see what is viable for the future as an absolute benefit for everyone..

Do any requirements even belong on any domain name?

How can they be policed anyway feasibly?

Will there be a consortium that sets a standard for the rising lowest common denominator?

What is the cost of not having one consortium or one platform that unifies all mobile technology?

Can it be Dot Mobi?

-------

(Yes, I have been trying to solve this in absolute terms for an absolute benefit to all, I wrote this response to further thought)

Yes, the intention of my post was to inspect the viability of trend in Dot Mobi's principle argument.. I wanted to talk about "across the board" minimum recommendations throughout all time periods to come..

How will Dot Mobi evolve in the future? Will their current principle "to work on all phones" hold up viably?

"Richer technologies" like WURFL is not easy to adopt for common developers as technology and phones keep advancing; and, even if you look today at all those corporate Dot Mobi's, practically, how many of their sites are doing this - almost none? What is the reason?

We need to talk about the future of compliance so, yes, we need to examine the "lowest common denominator" as a starting point principle to examine the future viability of the "works on all phones" creed.. Not at one instant in time or what one site does, like today, but at ALL times for ALL sites!

DotMobi's ready.mobi standard may someday be sidestepped by an all out world branding success that would subsequently spur many non-compliant .mobi sites around worldwide I call the "leaky bucket".. Then, it will not be even close to feasible to police.. This is why the slow release has been good so far..

But what will the future for DotMobi hold in terms of its principles' direction?

Can it come down to the bare domain name (one TLD) that holds the consortium to "work on all phones" (3-6 billion oncoming likely)? Don't we need one platform or one consortium to unify all these phones? What is the cost of disarray among all TLDs mobile for user experience?

The lowest common denominator principle (important, like what Windows Mobile has done on the weakest internet handsets to unify into one platform all mobile software) is a key principle if a TLD is chosen like DotMobi if there is a consortium supporting loudly to the public its creed; otherwise, with more popularity, subsequent massive Dot Mobi registrations just won't comply their sites if say a Google.mobi does advertise suddenly a popular new TLD.. By then, .mobi may turn into a branding phenomenon only with countless sites out of compliance for public eyes..

I am a speculator myself, but we have to be practical on what's being used and not used today as a trend indicator for tomorrow by the masses.. Sometimes I have hope that Dotmobi can be the TLD among all TLDs going mobile that can continually be the identifier that it "works on ALL phones" through a standard.. But with the "leaky bucket" threat, sometimes I wonder if DotMobi is heading towards a branding only period - and domain names should be free (and impossible to police).

Am I making sense :)?

..I am just searching for the truth as I have been involved in Dot Mobi deeply since day 1

Kind Regards,

Yelo

Fragmentation and Beyond

Okay

After couple years into this thing, I have narrowed my proof conclusion into 4...

1.)

"Free Market":

-The market will dictate what developers put out there with no absolute mobile congruency for humanity.. (Plus: Morally free of bias +/- Minus: But, does this actually threaten "One Internet" by forming pockets worldwide setting back humanity a long time?)

vs.

"Top-Down":

-At cost-benefit analysis to humanity, one absolute standard entity arises globally for the mobile technological functioning of each of billions of phones oncoming to the internet.. (like what Microsoft Windows did for computer software on one platform and anything inherent with no need to download?).. But, what will be the one entity? United Nations?

vs.

"Bottom-Up":

-One Open Source movement solution like WURFL rises as paramount (the demand for WURFL rises past the IPhone era)

vs.

The Bare Bones Domain Name - Both Socialism & Capitalism: One Domain Extension "Top-Down" Loud Espousing Globally (simlutaneously, "Bottom-Up"); all other TLDs "Free Market" + "Bottom-Up":

-DotMobi

mTLDs development restriction should be dropped. They ditched their RFP so it's not like they can't admit their own stupidity and move on.

What a pain in the ass if they have low-standards, you build a site, then 2 years later tell you that you can finally upgrade your site to be new tech compatible. Total BS. Mobile technology is ever changing and people might want to be ahead of the curve and have sites optimized and ready for new technology. mTLD policy as it stands is incredibly restrictive. Their logic is that all mobi's will work on a cell is nice in theory but who really gives a crap?

Yelo...how is your mobi portfolio doing? You were an early supporter that grabbed a lot of mobi's if I remember correctly.

hi!

labrocca hi

nice to hear from you

I actually agree with you, no restrictions for "free market" developing on all the TLDs on the planet except one - DotMobi (so that we do not pose to set humanity back with fragmentation threats and safeguard "One Internet")

That is proposition #4 (above)

------

At my peak, I had about 700 Dot Mobis (credit card )..

Now, let me count, only a few left - less than 5 that I am holding on to in my mind..

And, who knows, maybe just one to keep for sure - HolyQuran.mobi, if it's meant to be..

I have been pushing a couple .com sites trying to live off of them, today..

With all the crazyness in my life going on, sometimes I don't factor my disposition into what I am trying to say here objectively about DotMobi even..

For personal reasons right now in my life, less is more..

But for the greatest good for the greatest amount of people, humanity absolutely, I am vying as a change agent, in the Present..

Time is a precious, "Time to hurry up and slow down time" (humor from a Dream)..

Let's be candid ... the ".MOBI" had a very small window of opportunity, and it has come and passed ... for now, by and large, we're seeing standardization around corporate "M Dots" (by some of the biggest players on the planet) - but already with the demand and proliferation of super cool iPhones™ and other smart devices it has made the evolution to the full & unrestricted Mobile Web©, in my view. :talk:

To answer your question (I think), locate some busy and influential developers and ask them if they wish to develop for an exciting, expanding market ... or for one that is, by the day, shrinking and - here in the interim - losing market share to the efficiencies and branding consistency of "M Dots", IMHO. :gl:

Just my two sense.
