Hey Maximum,
I had a
group of friends out here in Las Vegas that use to help some of our veterans and their families during deployment. We're mostly union members and local businesses doing what ever was needed. It was a great success for a while and brought a source of redemption for my self. That I had never served left me feeling ashamed and obligated to do something.
I'll never feel that pride again. I'll never feel that useful. We would mow lawns, paint houses, clean swimming pools .... make home repairs, auto maintenance and any other thing a soldier was no longer able to do or that his or her spouse was unable to do while deployment. Sometimes it was the simplest thing that would break me down. The minute inconveniences expressed by one person while another quietly struggles with a monumental endeavor to survive. Survive nights alone, nightmares, bills, sicknesses, pain in unimaginable forms ....
Once another outfit started up, with national recognition, we conflicted with their name so I shut the site down. There are more programs and funding in place now so we we're just a temporary fix on a small local scale in the early stages.
I would extend your comments to include the home bound, that's how they feel, family, spouses and loved ones to our service men and women that anguish as much if not more than our "soldiers" deployed. I saw some of the strongest women (spouses), son and daughters buck up and get it done at their weakest moments. War is truly hell and loved ones fight it as if they were there.
I support our troops! I keep a stack of 30-40 "Support Our Troops" car magnets in my truck and hand them out to homeless looking for donations. I hand them 5-6 and suggest they sell them for some extra pocket change. I know the ones that are veterans .... as soon as they see the car magnets and my license plates "USAFORD". I suggest, as you did, that we all count our blessing and be grateful our freedoms .... then realize there is a small group of brave men and women guaranteeing those freedoms and blessing sometimes paying the ultimate price.
Thank "You" for your service and God Bless all our service men and women :tu:
