What's the point???

I see a lot of ads looking for domains with adsense revenue of $1, to $5. What is the point of buying with such a low income threshold?
Also, what do you expect to pay for that?

I also see a lot of domains buying and selling for anywhere from $5 to $25, granted, some of the names aren't that great, but these transactions seem futile, and don't seem like a good way to make a living.

I have been selling for a while, and I don't understand these type of transactions. Why does it seem like everyone is aiming so low?
Is the market that bad in the forums?
Why do so many people seem to not want to pay for premium .com domains?

I have seen to many ads where someone wants a premium .com for Under $100,
Are they kidding, or are they new?

I have also had many many offers for premium domains of $15 and $20.

Is it just me or does it seem that everyone is looking for something for nothing, or there are a few thousand people out here looking for a 3 letter .coms like car.com for $135???

I am not getting the whole forum thing, please help.

Selling domains on forums normally isnt the best thing to do, forums are full of resellers so obviously just like you they are looking to buy low, sell high.

If you bought 5 names at $8 each = $40 and then sold them quick at $25 each your profit would be $85, do that daily and that beats a min. wage job any day, plus you get to stay home and work in your underwear.

If you own 200 domains making 1$ a day - It's still 200$ a day - Depending on your ROI etc ... It can be a decent way to get by ... Not as nice as say one domain making 200$ a day of course , But still profitable if picked up cheap enough.

I guess I'm starting to get it. It just seems like a lot of work to have that many domains, making so little, but I can see where it all adds up.
So the forums are full of people looking to buy low and sell high. I get it now.

I thought buying low was $500 and selling high was $1500 + after developement.
So where are the developers that know how to take a domain with traffic and develop it into more of a money maker? Doesn't anyone do that anymore?

From what I'm hearing, it seems people on the forums are looking for things that are already done, that don't require any work. I guess if you only look for that, you won't get powerhouse sites, not that $200 a day is anything to sneeze at.
Do you think that is cheapening the market?

I've noticed that too what you are saying. It sounds like you are more into developing domains, like I do. If that's true you'll know developers don't hang around forums much but are busy developing. Traders "socialize" more because it's part of the game. That seems to be the crowd that comes here to NP.

I live off of developing websites (for myself and for clients) and I see trading more of a hobby unless you've been in the business from the start.

if you are selling a site that gets $1 a day, there are high probabilities of that domain being unoptimized for search engines and that is not well marketed or it has unoptimized ads.

If you can get that $1 to $5 daily it's a very good business.

I would be very happy if all my names make $1 per day. Even if it makes $1 per month, it will still covers the reg fee, which will make me happy. Even if I don't make much income,
I am still hoping the name will be acquired by an end user at much higher price.

in simple terms. much like real estate, there are developers (contractors, etc) and realtors (buyers/sellers/agents).
the realtors hold on to domains, as long as they break even, most of us are happy- the reg. fee is paid, and much like land, the domain names we own will most likely pick up in value over time.

The contractors have the one ability that i am jealous of, being able to build an effective website.

Granted, the dev/agent type "jack of all trades" that understands the dynamic of the naming conventions are usually the ones generating some sweet medium income.
the true money making domainers have their portfolios, some of them exceeding over 100.000 domains!!!) parked and make a killing this way. They trade, sell and acquire names and are probably not part of this board.
if so, please step up and provide the NP community with some hints.

just my opinion....an extremly small percentage domain for a living....selling in a forum is not ideal...but...you can make a small profit doing it...many come into domaining seeing $$$$ signs.....seems simple enough....go register a domain name and sell it...If that were the case...everyone would be rich...i see alot domainers who treasure how large thier portfolio is ....rather than the quility of thier portfolio...Many start right off trying to make a business out of domaining...rather than enjoying learning...making friends,,,just having a good time domaining.....i have heard so many times from sellers...alot of them very new to the industry..."I am just in this to make money" ... Totally the wrong approach....i've seen many come and go...i will see many more come and go...The industry is dog eat dog....I myself domain as a hobby..i seriously doubt if it will ever become anything more than that for me.

I snipped your post to conserve space but you are right on the money. I have been reading all I can on domains for about 2 weeks, and I resisted the urge to shop til I drop. I bought 1 so far for my future business and I read and learn as much as I can.
On the other end people doing it for fun and a little pocket money as a bonus are probably more realistic even though as anything in life I am sure we got some hobbiest that did a killing here and there.

A lot of very good information here thanks. Up until now I have been doing whole packages for clients (domain, hosting, SEO, traffic , ect), and I get those from externall marketing and referals.

I can see the benefit of all the responses, and I appreciate them.
It is definitly more beneficial for me to continue my current course, because most small and med busineses dont even know these forums exist, so these are not the places to pick up say a realty company with no site at all.

I agree totally if I'm getting your point. It would be a big investment to buy a single domain making 200$ a day or 200$ a month for that matter.

I would like to see my investment spread out over more domains making less individually but with the same average total. That way if one takes a nosedive for whatever reason. Your income doesn't go away overnight.
