It's my understanding that people reg names and park them to judge the traffic -- and if the traffic is insufficient, they get a refund/cancel the order.

Sounds like KenyaTech to me.

Had the same experience, they registered about 100 .comยดs I was about to register, a week letar they were available again and I grabbed them. (good thing too, Iยดve had offers on 5).

Another week passed and they registered the .nets only to let them drop too.

Very strange indeed. Some of my garbage domains expired, then was right away registered by some people, but then was deleted again.

there are a few companies I know off hand that are doing what is being called "tasting"

Either via their own registrars or via agreements with outside registrars they are registering tens of thousands of domain names daily. If the domain receives X traffic in that single day test they keep the domain, if it doesn't receive X traffic they delete it.

The reason is simple, they know that if a domain name they purchase has X traffic in that single day it should make them a return on investment that they feel to be acceptable.

This has been going on for quite some time now and there have even been random news articles that talk about it. There is nothing 'fishy' about it, these are large companies in some cases, with large backing (1.5 million float give or take in one case a while back), everything is automated, very little human involvement.

Anyone can do it, buy a registrar (25k), hire a programmer to write a little script(2k), deposit a float(?k), register as many names as you can afford, keep the ones with traffic to monetize via ppc, delete the bad names, etc. etc.

smith , thanks for clearing a few things up re-tasting , but i find it a bit hard to understand ........... reg a .com then delete , then reg the . net then delete . then reg the .org and delete ? has the programmer gone mad ?

no, just a matter of creating a word list and running it in each of the main extensions. It only costs them money if they want to keep the domain name, so why not hit every name in the 3 main extensions right?

Create a list of 100k terms / letter combos / etc

Register 100k list in .com names

keep 500

delete 999,500

get a credit back

Using the same word list, register 100k .net names

keep 500

delete 999,500

get a credit back

. . . and so on

In my case the .coms all had overture of 50,000 plus.

I guess when the .com`s failed to produce any traffic, it would make sense to try the other extensions.

does godaddy allows cancel domain n get refund?
or which registrar allows that?

RegFly allows that.

KenyaTech has their own registrar, so it's super convenient for them.

Hi Malaysia. This little trick is, usually, only available to registrars. The registry allows the registrar a grace period during which time a registrar may drop the name and receive a refund. The procedure was setup to protect the registrar from fraud and non-payment ie chargebacks. It was never intended to be used as a testing device for a domains traffic- a practice that is becoming, increasingly, common place among a faction of the registrar community- registrars that, IMO, are acting unethically but who are operating within the parameters of law.

There is only one registrar that I know of that offers a program which allows registrants to test out a domain and receive a refund- in essence, they are passing the benefits of their grace period along to their customers. I'm not certain if they are still offering this feature and I don't know much about them but here's their email link: [email protected].

Regfly? I didn't realize that. Interesting.... Maybe now that the little secret is out, registrar's will be sharing their grace period w/ their customers. Nevertheless, It's still a loophole and a workaround of the original intent behind the the registry giving a grace period window to the registrars.

Read up on Kenyatech on Google, and here in this site as well as other domain name oriented sites....

Its not paranoia nor some far-fetched crazy notion that someone in "Kenya" (yea, whatever) :| has thought of the same name you did AT THE SAME TIME OR THEREABOUTS and always seems to register it before you do BUT may drop the name a couple of weeks later and "allow you to register it", or, you may find your name idea for sale on their bogus web site.

Its happening to far too many people across the globe for it to be paranoia or some coincidence.

Because GoDaddy denies this is happening and I do 100% of my WHOIS searching through them - and because Kenyatech / Directnic / Intercosmos will not return calls nor emails about this -- I believe EACH AND EVERY conspiracy theory written about those folks. EVERY one of them.

If they dont have the decency to defend or explain* themselves, then, well, they're guilty of whatever people accuse them of.

*- if it were LEGAL and ETHICAL then why would Kenyatech and GoDaddy and a LOT of other domain forums deny this is happening -or- ignore questions about it? Gee... I wonder.

I think you *might* be onto something, but it goes so much deeper than domain name checks. For a moment, just consider the possibility that KenyaTech is actually reading your mind.

I think you need this:

http://zapatopi.net/afdb/

Really in this thread I've explained more than you need to / deserve to know, and I could tell you much much more, but I won't post it here out of confidentiality for the people involved.

But I will tell you privately . . .

Let me transmit the details of which I know, and have not posted to you, *thinking thinking thinking* damn it I'm blocked. . . you're already wearing a tinfoil hat aren't you??

:D

lol i posted a thread about kenya tech few week ago.
Again KENYA TECH and several other 10 - 15 domain registration companies own by intercosmos media inc.
If you use any of their registration companies to do search for domain and don't register it. Their are high chances they would register all those domain name.
