Hello pros,

Just curious, what domains to think will get hot next?

Thank you for your input.

Sincerely,
Mlebo.

If you can figure out where the Chinese are going to spend their money, that is the next trend.

LOL,why not ask a Chinese to answer the question, just like me.

nGTLDs approved by the MIIT of China (coming soon.. xyz, club, etc.)

When it comes to new and advancing technology related domains in .com extension I think you might be right.

But I would suggest not to follow Chinese money when it comes to domains because you are almost certain to lose your money, like many here on NP already know.

Just look how many CHIP domains are being dropped and those abstract numeric domains not to mention the mindless registrations in new gTLDs. Most of the Chinese domain registrations are not Trends but Fads.

How about .cn and .cc?
End-users of country code top level domains (cTLDs) will tend to secure their generic top-level domains (gTLDs) equivalents, where possible. This is already happening.

Q What will be the next hot domain trend?
A Domains ending with the new #1 global future TLD
.top

.top is one of the only four TLDs which got approved by MIIT (ministry of industry and information technology of the people's republic of China)

End-users will need to combine multiple extensions (3 or 4 at least) to make an impact online. I foresee .com leading, followed by a couple of the short, top-level generic extensions such as .top, .xyz.

I disagree. Diluting your online presence is in principle counterproductive. There will be defensive registrations in many nGTLD's, sure, but it doesn't have much to do with making an impact online.

As for VR, we still don't know how it will be used, there is no general theme for now. Will users only play and watch stuff using VR headsets or will those headsets provide browsable experience as well? If the latter is true, there might be good times coming to domaining yet again. If not, only the top VR-related domains will sell well.

I'd say 2-letter ccTLD's and brandable .com's have the biggest potential for the next few years.

What are you disagreeing with?

Defensive registrations are not only meant to protect possible trade mark infringements, but also traffic leakage. To make an impact online you need to avoid traffic leakage at all cost, because it's cheaper on the long run.
Having multiple domain names does not necessarily imply that you have to develop them, so talking of dilution is out of the case. Less popular extensions will/may forward/redirect visitors to the main website. It's already happening.

The next hot domain trend can be divided in 2 ways IMO:

  • Based on regging/buying volume: This will most likely be another trend linked to China. In the domain world, and also here on NP, a majority is just trying to chase treasures. Look at the numerics and the CHiPs. Still now random 5L.coms are being offered under the label CHiP to make it more valuable. I suspect the new trend based on reg/buy will be:
    • A new tld that makes sense, like .blog, .app, .inc or something. I can see a few end user sales here, which will lead all treasure hunters to "get in early before missing the boat" and a lot will be regged. However, it is all dependant on a few nice sales in the first few weeks to get the hype going. After that, the hype will remain because of the staggering number of new regs.
    • I would give a technology in early development/adoption a nice chance. Looking at VR, this is still in it's early stages but all good domains are long gone and sales are made regularly. I think Holo or Beacon might have a nice shot, although this is just guessing in the dark. The same thing goes for this: if Holo domains have nice sales that hit the news, there will be more threads about it, more people stepping in which will increase hype.
  • Based on end user sales. I don't see a major shift here, of course the quality one word .coms sell themselves and will remain at the top sales based on price.
    • I think in sheer volume strong 2 word .coms and strong ccTLDs will probably have the most end user sales for another year to come. There are gTLDs that make sense, but I think the end user sales will be limited to 1 words or very strong 2 words, which make the volume of sales lower than .com or ccTLD.
    • Brandables might experience a shift. I see a lot of posts supporting BB (I am one of them) and just as much challenging BB. I think we will see more people investing in brandables and making websites themselves or maybe see another BB-like platform emerge, which would be focussed on the BB frustrations you can read here. I am confident BB will remain the nr.1 brandable marketplace, but I think the competition (Brandroot or Namerific mostly) is not very strong, so having a new brandable marketplace emerge which has the best features of all three might make sense. As this is hard to accomplish, I think most people wanting to leave BB just build a website for their own portfolio.

In my opinion brandables and ccTLDs (of emerging markets like India) will be the next big thing.

I've just tried searching for VR related domains, pretty much any major field like medical, games, even tennis! is taken. Think most of us may have missed the boat on that one. Keyword specific two word domains where both words relate to each other and pass the 'radio' test are worth getting. i have a few which i'm surprised weren't taken already

timetravel dot com that's a future technology for you, although i think ironically you would need a time machine to go far enough in the future to sell it, at which point the internet as we know it may not even exist

The best way to invest in VR is to register landmarks, cities, and things people want to see virtually.

There is no need to emphasize the VR in the actual domain name. That way when someone wants to see San Francisco, they just google San Francisco and head to SanFrancisco.com, .xyz, or .net. Virtual Reality will be so widespread and cheap (using 3D cameras) that almost every legit business will be able to provide a virtual tour.

P.S. It sounds like something a company like Alphabet (abc.xyz) or Starship (starship.xyz) would do.

True, i guess its a bit like putting the word camera or video in front of something. Only a handful make sense
