The very popular ROBTV (Report on Business) television network has changed their name to BNN (Business News Network) the past week.

Under the old name of ROBTV, they virtually owned the space on the internet in all the search engines. They own the mobi as well. It has taken years to get to this position with a highly marketable and easy to remember domain name.

Then, someone decides they need a name change?

They register or buy bnn.ca and are using it for the internet website. The problem for them is that they don't appear on search engines in an already crowded webspace. BNN.com is owned and directs to a "get rich quick" website. I am sure their business and finance customers really appreciate that. The mobi is owned by someone in China.

I would think that before they changed their network name, tv station name and logo and internet presence, they would have sought to purchase the dot com and dot mobi names. Regardless of the asking price, you know that it is a lot higher now that they have already changed everything. Unless, of course they don't mind having their traffic diverted elsewhere.

No domain squatting claims possible here either. The other websites already existed. Lucky break for the owners of bnn.com and bnn.mobi. Looks like money in the bank........just a matter of when and how much.

It is startling how little a business network that reports every day on google and yahoo and all the other internet companies, actually understand about domain names.

Every company should hire a dedicated domainer who could split his time looking for trademark violations, buying domains to direct more traffic, and giving guidance on a decision like this.

Ever notice how your friends' eyes glaze over when you try to turn the subject to domains? Even business people. It is an esoteric subject to most people.

Many hackers have put on white hats and now eat their Doritos on company time. It is not so far fetched to imagine the same thing for domainers. We should form a union. Free Beer on the job!
