Knowledge.

A flip answer, but it is the truth. Go to the "for sale" section of Namepros and see the lists of domains that people are trying to sell for $5, or $3 - less than their cost. Find a drop list and see how many names are abandoned each day. Once upon a time those names were the stuff of dreams. Now it is renewal time and the dream is not worth the price.

Read the old posts on this forum, and read some more. Read a whole lot before buying your first name, then move slowly. The longer you do this the better your moves are. It is not a game that you win with quanity -- quality rules and the only way to know quality is experience.

For investments, I'd initially stick to .com (there are many other good options, but those require more experience to invest it) -- pick domains that are short, memorable and generic -- they relate to a set of products/services or could be branded as such. Good luck and welcome to NP

^^ thanks a lot guys. Just wondering any pointers that youll have researched and learnt about buying domains that you'll wish that you'll could have already known before.
Would really help listening to more from you guys who have already been there and done that :)

Stay away from anything potentially trademark (TM), servicemark (SM), or copyright infringement. Too many slap happy lawsuits right now. Celebrities have the right to use their names. Many winning lawsuit after lawsuit.

Just jog around on the forums and you'll see many horror stories regarding this.

Here's a few. Here's a good thread with an attempt at 150 suggestions .

- Domains from high commission industries are better (e.g. real-estate, law, travel)
- Shorter is better
- .com is King. There are great opportunities with other domains but it is often good to have a significant % of your collection as .com
- Buy names that you are familiar with the industry. You should then have a better idea of what keywords are more significant. You should also be in a better situation to find your market for what you buy.
- Know your strengths and weaknesses in picking domains. I get assistance in picking some types of domains that I don't have strengths with and avoid other types.
- Assume that you have to pay for at least 3 years for your names. Don't blow your budget this year and be forced to lose your names next year.
- Keep asking questions and learning

...in a way if you are asking without any ideas of your own then it just won't happen from a creative perspective..you will be better off working on straight percentages and that probably means entering the wholesale market for LLL.com etc and gauging mark-up....nothing wrong with this purely monetarised approach...many do it.
