When you go to sedo.com, you can easily spot many domain listed for thousands dollars. But when you go to appraisal forum here, it's very rare to find domain names appraised more than mid xxx.

So my question is, to what kind of domain are you willing to spend $500 or more? What is the most important criteria so you are willing to buy domain in premium price?

Regards,
Sjarief

I find this a very friendly forum but in general there is a limited amount of knowledge - no disrespect to anyone especially those are experienced , very obvious by their comments and input.
Besides being more freindly and less cliquish than some other domain name forums that I have spent time at, (and that I will not mention by name, because it would be innappropriate and because it is against NP forum rules to directly bad mouth other domain name forums), NP is, by far the most active and has the most diverse membership in age and experience of any other similar forum. Unlike other forums, members are almost certain to get responses to their questions or for an appraisal request. Unlike some other forums, a newbie can comfortably ask a question or get an appraisal here and know that he/she won't get jumped on or hazed by those "in the know", because he/she is not "with it".
This is a vibrant, active, growing community which inherrantly includes a large number of domainers who are just starting out or who have limited experience. Don't confuse the forum makeup, which is a strength, with a generalized view that characterizes NP as a forum with a "limited amount of knowledge."
I did not say there wasn't but this is very definitely the best forum for newbies to get to know the business
I posted this before reading your follow up, so for the second time in a week, wot and Grrilla have gotten their communication lines crossed. You know wot? We'll get it right one of these days. That's wot. I understand your meaning after the clarification, and as always, my comments and criticisms are focused upon concepts and in no way are they meant to reflect upon the individual behind the idea.

The majority of names on appraisal in the forum are generally not worth $500 and most of the appraisers will never have spent that amount of money on a name.
However , even valuable names sometimes are way under praised and vice versa -I appreciate value is in the eye of the beholder/buyer

taking wot's comments in its full context, i fully understand and appreciate the point hes making. Imo, most appraisals hereare for names that are worthless and are being valued (clearly in their appraisals) by inexperienced members. Personally, this puts me off this particular forum, but it is friendly...

And I guess, if either myself or one of my peers is spending $500 on a name, then they/we/i know the value of the name already. Remember, domaining at present has found its level. 3 char .coms have a generic value and have a recognised upper and lower limit threshold. The same is to be said for names with traffic, developed sites, dictionary .coms etc etc. The exciting makets are in the emeringing technologies and cctld's and until such names have a bench mark sale on which to go on, appraising is like trying to find a piece of hay in a massive stack full of needles...

hmm...

The value of a domain name is only as good as what a buyer sees in it. And that buyer may never ever come around again in the natural life of a domain.

On the one hand, there are toadstools smoking weed that think their two specialist word .NET names with practically zero type-ins are worth $3k and more.

On the other, there are some .COM names I would have paid thousands for that I got at $500.

This is an industry with no benchmarks, just a lot of toadstools smoking grass.
