What Makes It "Web 2.0"?

I'm supposed to create a web 2.0 site for my graduation project due in a few weeks and I already have an idea of what I want it to be...except that it has to be a "web 2.0" website.

My question is this: what makes a website 'web 2.0'?

So far, I believe site application, layout design, colour palette perhaps, etc. gives it this "web 2.0" feel. Have I missed anything out?

My supervisor believes that 100% ajax features would be good enough to make the site very web 2.0 but to be honest, I do like one or two ajax features but too much can be annoying (new Facebook layout anyone?)...does anyone agree with me?

I believe general aesthetics, simplicity and idea is key, but I'm not sure if that's enough to make the site a 'web 2.0' site.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

That means the site uses technology to pull content (behind the screen) like google maps...

Good luck on your project

It is all about where the eye is drawn every element has to be simple and functional web 2.0 is just a term for getting rid of anything that isn't needed. While directing users towards key elements.

Thanks, that helps a lot. :)

Simply, it's a website that goes beyond the "normal" website that just provides information. Web 2.0 websites provide a service. Whether it is social networking (Facebook), directions (Google maps), and other interactive features.

Now then you can go ahead and say, well any forum is Web 2.0, but it is also a state of mind and how a website presents itself.

Hope that helped!

Bright colours, big buttons and gradients galore. That's the general visual interpretation, at least the way I see it.

my understanding of what makes a site WEB 2.0 is the interactivity....
users have the option to 'add' to the web site...
html is good for providing info(web 1.0) , php/ajax has the options to let user upload videos/pictures/add comments to create a website that the user 'seems' to have a lot of control over...

or google it....lol

The term "Web 2.0" describes the changing trends in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aim to enhance creativity, communications, secure information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the web. Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-culture communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, video sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. The term first became notable after the O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004.[1][2] Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but rather to changes in the ways software developers and end-users utilize the Web. According to Tim O'Reilly:
โ€œ Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as a platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.[3]

Web 2.0 is the social impact. If the site has a user system, comments, forum, blog or anything like that then it is Web 2.0. It just means social and dynamic.

Yep that's what Tim O'reilly said at one of the Oreilly conferences. He made the term "web 2.0" popular.
Web 2.0 sites often contain only user generated content:
- myspace
- wikipedia
- youtube
- etc etc

If the user is not a passive observer but can interact with your site in a lot different way then we call it "web 2.0" but I agree with Tim BL that everything was possible years ago .. even in the mid 90's

AJAX and RSS are web 2.0 technologies.

Nowadays just putting a BETA badge near the logo makes it web2.0 :D

Me - few things make me hit the "back" button faster than a site with a lot of unnecessary ajax doodads that someone put there just because they could!

I agree on the "social" definition of Web2.0 - to me, a web 2.0 site is one with a lot of user-contributed content - but I guess what's really important is how your instructor defines it!

Just wanted to add that web 2.0 is the most misused term I can now think of and in 99% cases web 2.0 technologies (ajax, etc.) are used in totally wrong places and hopelessly slowing down web browsing.
