What would make a domain name be worth more to a buyer?

If I was to sell a domain what would make it more appealing and so be sold for more to a buyer?

thanks for any help

1. If the name applies to them.
EXAMPLE) My name is Matt. I just got MattsProjects.com and MattsProjects.net. To another person named "Matt", these are valuable names. To somebody named "Joe", these are worthless.

2. If the name's subject is in demand.
EXAMPLE) Web Hosting is worth lots, and a very profitable business, assuming you do it correctly. So, www.WebHosting.com is worth a lot of money.

3. How the name fits the subject.
EXAMPLE) www.GimmeHosting.com I just am about to sell to somebody. It's a demanding market, yet "Gimme" sounds unprofessional and somewhat tacky. That was my mistake. (although the buyer is able to put it to good use.)

4. Length
EXAMPLE) www.msn.com, ignoring its popularity and website content, is probably worth low-mid $xxxx (probably near $8,000 if not much more). www.abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com (which is a real domain), is (ignore website content and popularity) worth less than regfee.

Hope this helps.

Good list compuXP - here's one more

5 - Safe from easy mistakes. How easy or difficult the name is to get/remember/type in wrong. Especially if you are not the owner of the easy mistaken ones. such as the plural/singular version. or number before/number after etc.

compuXP hit it right on the dot! Value of keywords is another one (as in, PPC value), IMHO.

What makes a domain worth more is when Microsoft trademarks a word that you already had a domain for. ;)

Im gonna have to disagree there abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com , is not worthless at all, it def. gets type-ins, it has meaning (alphabet), and it has novelty value. My .02

I agree with your head shaking, but you're right.

Note that it's large, wild cats (like, say Tigers/Panthers) and not the household variety.

I also think that, all things being equal, specific names (i.e., iPod) are better than generics (i.e. MP3 Player). The exception would be if a product is used as a verb (i.e. Xerox), in that case it would change the value.

I'd also add a 6, Branding/Development. CD.com is a FANFRICKINTASTIC domain, but it has been neglected and not developed. If somone wanted to buy CDs, they'd probably go to Amazon.

Continuing in that vein, Books.com would seem better at first glance than Amazon.com. Since Amazon has sold so many books, though, I'd say that it's a more valuable domain now.

Traffic makes the domain worth more for me, I'd take a high traffic 5 word .org over a 3 letter .com with no traffic if both were offered at the same price.

Add: Size of the potential buyers market and end customer market.

The domain RocketEngines.com would probably be of less value than TruckEngines.com, simply because there are many more potential businesses that could develop the domain for actual use. Although occassionally a deep pocket in a small market will send a domain through the roof on a longshot.

the end user market is another factor. music.com would be much more valuable than something like snowshoes.com simply because it appeals to a larger audience of potential end users.

IMO Design and traffic will get you more for a website. If you have regular traffic thats a big bonus to the end user. But also the length and proffesionalism of the name needs to be attractive.
