seems like the grace period for the domain is still in effect for the old owner
REGISTRY-HOLD: The registry sets this status. The domain can not be modified or deleted by the registrar. The registry must remove the REGISTRY-HOLD status for the registrar to modify the domain. The domain can be renewed. The domain will not be included in the zone.

It is possible to register a domain name for 10 years, last time I checked. In this case it's not to be removed.... I think.

Usually registrar-hold refers to one of two things, 1 the domain has been transferred in the last 60 days, it is not able to move for the next 60 days after a transfer has been done, I have also heard that if you change the contacts on some registrars domain they put that on hold for a period of time after unless you specifically contact them. The final thing this might be is on hold at the registry this means that there has been a debate over a trademark or patent and the domain can't be moved until it is settled.

The reason why he is probably quoting the $300 is that when he sells the name to you, you will get the time that he has already paid for until 2012. If you think that you are going to keep the domain for a long period of time then this may be a reasonable price for the domain. Take for example that he has 6 years left on the domain, he has already paid about $48 (6 x $8) you are only paying a markup of $250 on the domain. Depending on what you think the value is to your and your business this may be a fair price.

would i be able to keep that 6 years already registered?

Yes you can

You can register .com domains for 10 years, I registered mine for that lenght of time and I even got discount for that.

Of course I am not intending to sell it, it is only to develop a serious project which I hope will never die. :)

Most companies add another year onto the registration when you transfer. This is ONTOP of the current renewal date. If the domain is registered until 18th May 2011 then your transfer will probably renew it until 18th May 2012.

You keep the years that somebody else has paid for :$:
