what is Alexa - yes I'm serious!

Not sure if this is the right place for this
Can someone please explain what the Alexa
ranking means? I have a domain parked at sedo,
and I noticed the Alexa rank thing on it, so I went
to see what I can figure out, but I have no idea what
it means. can someone sum it up in "noob" terms....
as in is it good traffic? should I be doing something with it?

in short:

1. alexa has a toolbar
2. people install the alexa toolbar on their browser
3. people surf the internet
4. the toolbar send data back to alexa
5. this data is used to rank websites

it's something nice - but not terribly reliable since not everyone installs the alexa toolbar - so the data is not all-encompassing...

Thanks for the replies, I did read it but
still don't understand it. I guess because sedo isin't showing any of the traffic, I'm not understanding what the "traffic stats" mean and why their so high at Alexa.

If your site is getting better SERP's (Search Engine Result Positioning) for your intended keywords when people are using those keywords in search engines to find what they are looking for...the more chances of people with Alexa's toolbar installed will land on your site.

Resulting in better Aleaxa results.
But i would not get hung up on Alexa, it's not really that big of a deal and is as has been said not the most reliable way of telling how popular ones site is.

Yep, very true. If they supported firefox as a browser, it usage would probably skyrocket. That is the only reason i dont use alexa.

This is because your name is a sub-domain of game.tw

How does that happen? .game.tw is an actual ext that I regged...not sure what the sub-domain means?
does this affect mine in anyway? good or bad?
it never said anything about a sub domain when I bought it? Is there something I am missing with this? Is it a bad thing?

What makes Alexa totally unreliable as an indicator are all the scripts designed to boost your Alexa ranking by sending hits to your site via proxies. Alexa should be used as a guide but not relied upon in any way to calculate the value of a site IMO.

Maybe using some kind of public site statistic, like http://extremetracking.com .

Alexa have http://alexa.com/site/site_stats/signup , but i dont know is it independant site statistic or shows only the alexa toolbars generated data.
